WASHINGTON –– An early goal put American University field hockey ahead, but goals in the third and fourth quarters are what sealed the deal and saw the Eagles defeat the University of Maine, 3-0, on Friday evening at Jacobs Complex.
Notable
- Jordan Reicher, Sophie Willemse, and Jill DuVarney were the AU goalscorers, in that order. Reicher and Willemse now lead the Eagles with five goals on the season while DuVarney collected her third goal in the most recent run of five games.
- Emilia Winkler, who earned an assist on Willemse's goal, now leads the team with eight assists so far this season.
- American led the Black Bears 13-4 and 10-0 in shots and shots on goal, respectively.
How It Happened
It was early, the fourth minute, when the Eagles broke through with Reicher's goal.
Elle Ridge sent the ball into the circle to Reicher who carried it past a defender and beat the keeper, scoring a five hole goal to put AU up 1-0.
The scoreline would remain level in the second quarter, with American leading by one at the half, but in the third, Willemse would double the lead on yet another textbook corner. Inserter
Katelyn Dulin and stopper Winkler each got assists on the goal.
With less than 90 seconds to play in regulation,
Sam Kockx fired in a shot with a trajectory over the keeper but looking like it might also carry over the cage, but DuVarney was there with the redirect to make close it all down and and see the Eagles to their 3-0 victory over the Maine Black Bears.

"I think their goalkeeper made some great saves today. We were in good positions for second shots, second chances, but sometimes the opponent does a great job, and we can work on being a little more calm in those situations, but each week we're getting better.
"I think we need to be better in how we can break open low zones that are putting a lot of numbers underneath the ball, we have to better about our shape, and winning without it being in contest. That'll be one of the big focal points for teams we'll have that might drop a lot of numbers back."
