WASHINGTON –– After grabbing the equalizer in the third period, the Providence Friars responded with what would be the game-deciding goal 50 seconds later to defeat American University field hockey, 2-1, at Jacobs Complex.
Notable
- Kaleigh Missimer, with her goal against the Friars, now has four goals on the season behind team leaders Jordan Reicher and Sophie Willemse, each with five.
- Providence led 11-9 in shots and 7-3 in shots on goal, but both teams had 5 penalty corner attempts each.
How It Happened
The Friars opened up the game on the offensive, playing much of the first minutes in AU's defensive third and netting a goal in the ninth minute on a shot from Saar Koper, assisted by Johanna Mahner.
Still trailing at the start of the second half, American came out of the halftime break recharged. In the 36th minute, a ball was sent into the circle by
Maura Read and with an acrobatic, between-the-legs effort, Missimer saw the ball past Providence's
Pauline Gineste to equalize.
Firing back, the Friars found the go-ahead goal a minute later thanks to Carly van Benten, this time assisted by Koper, to lead 2-1.
Despite
Jordan Reicher rattling the cage with two back-to-back shots and then forcing a save from Gineste in the 58th minute, the Eagles were handed their first loss since September 4.
