Field Hockey Falls to Lafayette in a Shootout

EASTON, Pa.  ––  American University field hockey battled through a goalless 75 minutes of play, including both regulation and overtime, before the game against Lafayette was decided in a penalty shootout that saw the Eagles fall, 1-0, to the Leopards.

Notable
  • This is the 13th game between the Eagles and Leopards that has gone to overtime. It was the first game between the two that has been decided by a shootout.
  • The loss is American's first in regular season Patriot League play since October 9, 2022, after three 6-0 seasons.
How It Happened
It was a deadlocked game through all of regulation. At halftime, American led in shots, 6-5, and in shots on goal, 3-2. Lafayette led 2-1 in penalty corners midway through. These stats would hold through the entire second half as no shots, saves, or corners were attempted in the second half.

Maura Read earned the only penalty corner early in overtime, but the Leopards knocked Sophie Willemse's shot down to keep the game going and ultimately, it would come down to a shootout as the game remained scoreless through 75 minutes of play.

In the best of five penalty shootout, Lafayette would win with three shots to one to claim their first victory over American in eight seasons.

From Head Coach Jennings
"It was such a hard fought game by both teams tonight," said head coach Steve Jennigns postgame. "Lafayette is playing great hockey and the clash of styles made for some very compelling passages of play.

"In the end, there were few clear chances for either side and the game was a back and forth tactical affair. We are disappointed to lose but feel very positive about many aspects of our performance. We need to keep working hard and continue to improve."

Coming Up
