Piscataway, N.J. –– The Scarlet Knights started the scoring early and American University field hockey wasn't able to claw all the way back into it, despite a late, two-goal push in the final six minutes, dropping 4-2 against Rutgers.
Notable
- American earned 12 corners to Rutger's four. Rutgers led 14-10 in shots and 11-6 in shots on goal.
- Seniors Katelyn Dulin and Jordan Reicher were AU's two goalscorers. Reicher now leads the squad with six on the season.
- Teagan Harmon, the Eagles' keeper, had seven saves on the day and the All-American Rutgers keeper, Emily Nicholls, had four game-changing saves that kept American from tallying any more.
How It Happened
The first goal of the game came 64 seconds into play, for Rutgers, the Scarlet Knights pressing high to go ahead early and gain an advantage.
Rutgers earned its first corner in the 20th minute of the game, and each of the two corner attempts resulted in back-to-back big-time saves from Harmon; however, with two minutes left in the first half, Rutgers did just that on a goal from Sophie Kuiper.
Kuiper would score again for the Scarlet Knights in the 36th minute to make it 3-0 with a period and a half to go.
On their 10th corner of the game, with six minutes remaining, American–by way of Dulin, assisted by
Riley Clouse–got a goal to prevent the shutout. Less than two minutes later, with four and a half minutes remaining, Reicher tallied another to make it a one-goal game. AU down 3-2 with momentum on its side.
Despite the Eagles' pushing, with under 40 seconds left, the Scarlet Knights flipped the field and got an insurance goal to go ahead 4-2 and clinch the win.
From Head Coach Jennings
"A very disappointing performance by us today," said
Steve Jennings postgame. "Rutgers did a great job of being front foot and forced us into uncharacteristic mistakes which cost us badly today. We showed some pride in the fourth quarter to make it interesting, but we weren't sharp in the way we needed to be for this match.
"We have a lot to work on this week and look forward to being back home for our next game."
