WASHINGTON –– Sophie Willemse was unstoppable with three goals to her line on the stat sheet when American University field hockey took on Colgate, downing the Raiders 4-1 on Saturday afternoon.
Notable
- All of Willemse's points came from attacking penalty corners; the center back otherwise occupied on the other end of the field. Willemse leads the team with eight goals this season.
- Emilia Winkler earned two more assists, pushing her season total to 10.
- The fourth goal of the day came from Olivia Morraye, tipping in a shot from Jordan Reicher. Morraye also had two asissts on the day.
- American earned 15 penalty corners against Colgate, converting on four of the attempts.
How It Happened
The scoring didn't start until the second period, but on an AU corner in the 17th minute of the game Willemse earned the first goal of the day on a textbook corner.
Willemse again, with four minutes to play until halftime, when Morraye inserted a corner and Winkler stopped it, Willemse again, slammed it home. The ball was tipped by the Raider's flyer trying to stop it, but Willemse's shot was true and put AU up 2-0.
A dangerous foul in American's defensive circle gave Colgate a penalty stroke with 90 seconds left in the first half and the two teams went into halftime with American up 2-1 after the Raiders converted the stroke.
Two more Eagles' goals, 100 seconds apart, in the third period solidified the win, both coming on penalty corners again. Reicher's attempt was snuck in by Morraye in the 35th minute and Willemse again, on another textbook corner that gave assists to Morraye and Winkler, put American up 4-1.
AU held off late press by Colgate to claim another conference victory and go up 2-1 in Patriot League play.
