BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Four distance runners on the American University track team have been named to the Outdoor Track & Field Academic All-Patriot League Team, the conference announced on Wednesday.
On the women's side, three Eagles were named to the team: seniors
Kate Riley and
Annie Ripol and sophomore
Zoe Rector. Rector was also named to the team in the indoor season. On the men's side, sophomore
Barak Goldstein was named to the team for the first time.
Peace Omonzane from Boston University swept the indoor and outdoor Women's Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors, while Justin Mumford of Navy was named Men's Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
All four athletes have been named to the Patriot League Honor Roll during each semester competing for AU; the seniors, Riley and Ripol, have each earned seven honors while the sophomores, Rector and Goldstein, have each earned three.
This outdoor season, Ripol established herself on AU's all-time top-10 list in her debut of the 10k, running 37:00.78 for fifth all-time at the Virginia Challenge (Apr. 17). Rector lowered her collegiate personal best in the 5k by 24 seconds, running 17:48.18 at UVA. Riley ran a season best of 4:39.85 at the Kehoe Twilight Meet (May 1), just off her personal best. Goldstein lowered his personal best in the 800 meters to 1:52.31, and also ran the third leg of the men's 4x800 relay that earned a bronze medal at the Patriot League Championships last weekend.
Ripol, who earned her bachelor's degree in mathematical statistics, has a cumulative GPA of 3.68. Riley, who earned her bachelor's degree in international studies, has a cumulative GPA of 3.82. Rector, who is pursuing a bachelor's degree in policy, has a cumulative GPA of 3.98, and earned a perfect 4.0 in the spring. Goldstein, who is pursuing a bachelor's degree in psychology, has a cumulative GPA of 3.76.
To be eligible for the Scholar-Athlete of the Year award and the Academic All-Patriot League Team, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and be a starter or key player in his/her sport. Freshmen or students in their first academic year at their school are not eligible for the honor. These honors recognize student-athletes who excel in their sport and the classroom.
