WORCESTER, Mass. –– It was a close, defensive contest from start to finish, but American University field hockey ultimately lost, 2-1, in a shootout to Holy Cross on Sunday.
Notable
- Kaleigh Missimer now has seven goals on the season–second on the team in scoring– and has a career conversion record of 7-for-9 on penalty stroke attempts.
- The Crusaders had no shots on target in the second half or overtime; the Eagles led in penalty corner attempts, 3-1.
How It Happened
The Crusader's struck first on a rocket of a shot from Ava Huntley, assisted by Marianna Maclean, in the 20th minute. American found itself fighting from 1-0 down for the second PL game in a row.
In the 28th minute, still trailing, Missimer carried the ball into the circle and was taken down, earning a penalty stroke attempt. As she has already done twice this season, Missimer converted and the Eagles went even with the Crusaders at 1-all into the halftime break.
At the end of regulation, both teams had four shots on frame, each had one goal. It would move to overtime to be decided. When the extra period wasn't enough, it all came down to a best-of-five shootout that saw Holy Cross take the win, 2-1.
From Head Coach Jennings
"Today was a strong contest between both teams. Holy Cross played very well with their structure and counter attacking and we were strong with possession and pressing. It is always difficult to lose in a shootout, but we will have to learn from today and pick ourselves up for senior day next weekend."
Coming Up
The Eagles are home for their final regular season game. The squad is taking on Lehigh on Halloween, Oct. 31 at noon. The contest will be the team's Senior Day and Alumni celebration so be sure to arrive early and stay alert during halftime.
