WASHINGTON –– Three goals from three different goal scorers saw American University field hockey take down crosstown Georgetown, 3-1, on Sunday afternoon at the Jacobs Complex.
Notable
- Riley Clouse and Elle Ridge earned their first goals of the season, and in Clouse's case, it was the sophomore's first collegiate goal. The third goal came from freshman Sam Kockx for her fourth goal of the season.
- The Eagles had eight shots on goal to the Hoya's two while also earning six penalty corner attempts to the visitor's two.
How It Happened
Clouse opened the scoring in the eighth minute of the game.
Emilia Winkler carried down the end line, distributing the ball across the front of goal and after taking a deflection from a Hoya, Clouse was there at the back post to shovel the ball into the cage and put AU up 1-0.
In the 20th minute, it was a similar setup that saw Ridge grab her goal.
Kaleigh Missimer took a shot from the top of the circle and the save was rebounded; four Eagles then battled for the ball and Ridge won out, slipping the ball through on the back post when the GU keeper came off her line.
Less than 90 seconds into the second half, Kockx would get her goal. Winkler, from the 25 yard line, sent the ball ahead to
Jill DuVarney who one touch passed it to Kockx. The striker beat out two defenders for the shot and gave AU a 3-0 lead.
It was 13 seconds later, just after the restart, that Georgetown capitalized on some disarray in the Eagles' formation and got their lone goal to deny Harmon a shutout for the day, but the Eagles would manage their neighbors and claim the 3-1 win.
