Volleyball Erases Early Deficit with 3-1 Win Over Army

WASHINGTON - After dropping the first set of Saturday afternoon's match to Army, the American University volleyball team responded in commanding fashion to take three sets in a row and win the match 3-1. Salme Adeele Hollas led the way for the Eagles with her second double-double of the season, while Elise Sterling put down 12 kills and hit a red-hot .579 on the day.

Notable
  • Hollas' double-double came via 14 kills and 15 digs, and she added a service ace.
  • Sophie Dufour matched Sterling's 12 kills with 12 of her own, and she was a dig away from her second straight double-double.
  • Prinzez Zeck continued her quality play up front, totaling five blocks. She had three denials in a row to close out the match in the final set.
  • Deniz Dakak and Bella Marrero combined for 34 digs, while Dakak dished out 41 assists and came up with two block assists.
  • AU had 10 service aces to just four for Army, led by three from Alex Ioannou. The Eagles also doubled the Black Knights' total in blocks with 10, and committed just four reception errors as a team.
How it Happened
  • The first set was controlled by Army, as the Black Knights never trailed.
  • AU used a 4-2 run to squeeze a six point-lead down to three at 18-15, but Army closed the frame without letting it get any closer. Mackenzie Lynch and Juliette Myrick paced the visitors with four sets apiece.
  • AU's comeback effort in the second set turned the match on its head. The Eagles trailed 15-8 and appeared as they were headed into a two-set hole, but an 8-2 run charged by excellent serving from Marrero and Ioannou brought the score to 16-16. Hollas had two kills on the run, and Sterling with one.
  • American took the lead on an ace from Ioannou and never gave it up. Sterling had three more kills, accompanied by two from Dufour to help AU seal the set 25-22.
  • The Eagles had found their rhythm, dominating the next two sets.  The third frame proved to be AU's most efficient, hitting .389 with 17 kills as a team.
  • Keeping their foot on the gas, the Eagles scored the first four points of the fourth set and eventually led by 16 at 22-8. It was an easy finish from there, ending at 25-9.

Up Next
  • The Eagles stay at home next Friday, Sept. 26 when they continue Patriot League play against Navy. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
