Volleyball Comes From Behind to Defeat George Mason in Five Sets

FAIRFAX, Va. - It took five sets and three Eagle double-doubles for the American University volleyball team to top its crosstown rival in five sets, as AU saw impressive performances up and down the roster on Friday afternoon in Fairfax. Led by 19 kills and 11 digs from freshman Sophie Dufour, the Eagles overcame a 2-1 deficit and start the season 1-0.

Notable
  • The outside hitter Dufour made a statement in her collegiate debut, accumulating 20.5 points in her double-double performance.
  • Salme Adeele Hollas followed Dufour with a double-double of her own, delivering 13 kills with 12 digs in her first game as an Eagle.
  • The third double-double of the day came from Deniz Dakak, who had a quality afternoon distributing the ball. The sophomore setter dished out 45 assists and added 12 digs.
  • Picking up right where she left off last season, Elise Sterling continued to hit with efficiency. With just one error, she posted 13 kills and hit .480.
  • Bella Marrero led AU in digs with 17.
  • Carly Sciborski made her return to the starting lineup after missing all of last season due to injury, recording seven kills.
  • AU outhit George Mason .243 to .154, and made just 20 errors to GMU's 31.

How it Happened
  • It was a tight first set that ended with the Eagles on top 25-21. With the score 20-19, AU closed the frame with a 5-2 run to win it 25-21. Sterling provided the final kill, while Sciborksi and Dufour led AU with four kills each.
  • The script flipped in the second set, with George Mason catching fire in the final points to tie up the match. American led 24-21 after a Dufour kill, but the Patriots responded with a 5-0 run to win the set 26-24. AU was outhit .343 to .297
  • The teams continued to go punch-for-punch, with the third set required extra points as well. Tied at 25, Meredith Brown delivered a kill and George Mason won the set after an AU attacking error, 27-25.
  • American had a sharp response to losing the lead, commanding the fourth and fifth sets to come away with the win. After taking a 4-3 lead in the fourth frame, the Eagles never lost the lead from there. They took the fourth set 25-20, and posted no errors in the fifth set on the way to a 15-2 win.
