Volleyball Cruises to 3-0 Sweep of Georgetown for Bender Blue Out

WASHINGTON - In front of a buzzing Bender Arena with 1,338 fans in attendance, the American University volleyball team commanded its way to a 3-0 sweep of crosstown rival Georgetown. Salme Adeele Hollas led the way for the Eagles, notching 17 kills and hitting .417 on the day.

Notable
  • Through two games, Hollas is now hitting .284 with 30 kills.
  • Also having a very efficient day was Elise Sterling, who notched 13 kills with just two errors and a .611 percentage.
  • Bella Marrero took on 15 digs, while Deniz Dakak totaled 33 assists with seven digs.
  • As a team, the Eagles out hit the Hoyas .273 to .140, and had nine service aces to just two for Georgetown. The freshman Alex Ioannou led AU in that category, totaling four on the day.
  • AU is now 2-0 to start the season, coming off a five set win at George Mason on Friday.
How it Happened
  • After trailing 3-1 in the first set, the Eagles took control with an 8-0 run and led the rest of the way.
  • Sterling and Sophie Dufour combined for back-to-back blocks early on, getting the packed Bender crowd on its feet.
  • The Hoyas used a 6-2 run to get within three points at 15-12, but came no closer.
  • Prinzez Zeck put one down in the middle for a 23-18 lead, and two Georgetown attack errors gave the 25-18 set to American.
  • The Eagles out-hit Georgetown .290 to .179 in the first set, and served up four aces to the Hoyas' one.
  • An early 7-2 lead slipped away in the second set, as the Hoyas tied it at 7-all and went on to lead by as many as four at 14-10.
  • From there, a 6-1 run capped by a Dufour ace put the Eagles back on top at 16-15.
  • One more tie followed at 17-17 before AU closed it out with an 8-2 run that included back-to-back aces for Alex Ioannou.
  • Two errors on the Hoyas ended the set, with the Eagles taking it by a score of 25-19.
  • It was back-and-forth early in the third set until Hollas caught fire, putting down four straight kills in a 7-1 run that put AU up 15-9.
  • Hollas later got two more as part of a 3-0 run that included another Ioannou ace, and the Eagles took an 18-11 lead.
  • The Hoyas never narrowed the gap from that point, and the 17th kill for Hollas ended the match with a 25-15 win for the Eagles in the third set.
  • AU posted 18 kills and hit an impressive .429 in the third set, while Georgetown hit .214 with just nine kills.
