WASHINGTON - Troy Elgersma,
Jonah Fogel, and
Ian Webb-Johnson have been named team captains of American University men's soccer for the 2025 season. Elgersma will captain the squad for the second year in a row, while Fogel and Webb-Johnson earn the honor for the first time.
Elgersma comes into his senior season as the reigning Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year, breaking out in 2024 with seven assists and three goals. The midfielder was named to the Patriot League All-Tournament Team in the postseason, and earned a spot on the Academic All-League Team at season's end. The Redlands, California native has totaled over 3,000 minutes in his career at AU.
"For me, being captain of this team means showing up everyday and putting the team first," said Elgersma. "I'm super thankful to be in this position and that the guys have trusted me to lead them. I can't wait to see what this team achieves in the fall and I'm super excited to get started!"
Fogel enters 2025 as AU's lone senior defender and the most experienced member of its back line. He's coming off a career-best season in which he dished out two assists, played in every game, and went the distance for 90-plus minutes in 12 of them. Both Fogel and Elgersma have three years of Patriot League Tournament experience, including a run to the title game in 2022 as freshmen.
"To be the captain of this team is a true honor, and it's all about putting the team's goals above my personal ambitions and making sacrifices so the team can succeed," said Fogel. "Captain is more than just a title, it's about being someone to look up to or someone to rely on. This honor is something I do not take lightly, and I will do everything in my power to make sure we accomplish all our goals for this upcoming season."
The youngest of the group, Webb-Johnson made a strong impression during his sophomore season and is primed for an impactful junior campaign. The defender scored his first collegiate goal in AU's 1-1 draw of #23 VCU in 2024, and earned Patriot League Honorable Mention Defender of the Week for his performance.
"I am extremely honored and grateful to be named a captain for this upcoming season," said Webb-Johnson. "The amount of growth and success I've seen in the team and myself during my time here has been incredible, and I can't wait to find more this fall!"
