BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Capping off a stellar weekend for the American University men's soccer team,
Sebastian Garces and
Taku Takahashi have been selected as Patriot League Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week. The pair join
Troy Elgersma as the second and third Eagles to earn conference recognition this season.
Garces earned Offensive Player of the Week for the first time in his career, following a three-point performance on Saturday with a goal and an assist. His day started with a goal, as Garces pounced on a misplayed ball by Miles Hadley in Army's half and passed it to
Mustapha Sowe. Garces made a run towards goal as Sowe one-touched a well-weighted ball to him in the box, and the senior midfielder buried his shot to the bottom left corner of the net to give AU a 1-0 lead.
The assist came in the second half when Garces poked the ball forward to
Nicholas Beil in tight space in the box, and Beil blasted a shot to the top of the goal to lift the Eagles to a 3-1 lead.
Takahashi's Defensive Player of the Week honor comes after he picked up his third assist of the season against Army, setting up a spectacular goal from
Reyes Parra. The graduate student made a run through the attacking third to the top left side of the box, taking on two defenders before laying the ball back to an open Parra for the highlight-reel finish.
The Eagles are back in action on Tuesday night at William Mary, and return to Patriot League play on Saturday, Oct. 3 against Lafayette. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
