Wrestling Opens 2025-26 Dual Season Against #21 West Virginia in Bender; Concert Ticket Giveaway

WASHINGTON - The American University wrestling team begins its 2025-26 dual schedule with a matchup against #21 West Virginia on Saturday afternoon in Bender Arena.

Concert Giveaway For AU Students

All AU students in attendance to Saturday's match will be entered into a raffle for a chance to win two VIP tickets to Playboi Carti at Capitol One Arena on Tuesday, Nov. 11.
Attendance is free for AU students with the showing of their AU ID, and all participants in the raffle must stay until the conclusion of the match to be eligible to win.

What to Know About American

AU wrestling is coming off an accomplished 2024-25 season, posting the program's most wins since 2011 at 11-10 overall. The Eagles return four of their top five winners from last season, including #26 Raymond Lopez and #28 Caleb Campos.
Graduate seniors Maximilian Leete (133) and Jack Maida (141) are also back after being unable to compete in dual meets last season. Maida suffered a season-ending injury early in 2024, and Leete took a redshirt season. The pair are the two most experienced and accomplished wrestlers on the roster, as Leete was an NCAA-qualifier in 2024 and Maida made the tournament in 2023.
20 wrestlers were in open tournament action last weekend for the Eagles, both at the Navy Classic and at the East Stroudsburg Open. It was a strong showing for AU, with 12 placers across both tournaments.
The senior Lopez headlined the day, defeating Nebraska's #5 Jacob Van Dee on the way to a first place finish at the Navy Classic. The 133-pounder is following up a breakout 2024-25 campaign, having led AU in dual points (59) and dual wins (11).
Campos is ranked #28 after a 3-1 weekend at the Navy Classic, recording two major decisions and an 11-4 win over Binghamton's #32 William Ebert. The redshirt junior made a name for himself last year, going 24-13 with five pins, five technical falls, and five major decisions.
Lopez, Leete, and Maida are a part of AU's impressive depth of lightweights. Alongside them are sophomore JJ Peace and redshirt sophomore Coen Bainey at 125 pounds, who both totaled double-digit wins last season. In addition, freshmen Colin Martin (133) and Leo Maestas (149) have already made an impression, with Martin winning the ESU Open and Maestas taking third place.
Along with Bainey, redshirt sophomores Kaden Milheim (157), Gage Owen (149), and Emmanuel Ulrich (285) are primed to play impactful roles after promising first seasons in 2024-25. The four of them combined for 81 dual points and were regular starters, with Gage Owen starting in each dual meet.
The heavyweight Ulrich will be filling in big shoes left by Will Jarrell, who graduated in 2025 as the team's MVP with over 70 wins in his career.
Lopez, Leete, Campos, and Maida are this year's team captains. Leete and Lopez are serving in the role for the second straight season, while Campos and Maida are first-time captains.
