WASHINGTON - Following a busy day in Indiana that included three dual meets on Saturday, the American University wrestling team quickly turns around to take on local competition at home on Thursday. The Eagles host George Mason in Bender Arena, looking for their second win of the year before a two-week break between duals.
Inside the Series
- The Eagles lead the series 3-2 against George Mason, most recently defeating the Patriots in a tight match 19-17 last February.
- Timely wrestling was the story of the dual last season, as the Eagles tallied 28 third period points and won two bouts from behind on their way to a 19-17 win.
What to Know About American
- The Eagles are coming off a 1-2 showing at The Boilermaker Duals last weekend, held at Purdue. AU fell to Northern Illinois 21-12, defeated Buffalo 23-15, and lost to Purdue 34-10.
- Redshirt junior #27 Caleb Campos highlighted the individual performances for American, going 3-0 with a technical fall, pin, and major decision.
- His most notable win of the day came over Purdue's #27 James Rowley, a 16-8 major decision. Campos jumped on him with two takedowns in the first period and never surrendered the lead from there.
- Senior Raymond Lopez also took down a ranked opponent, pinning Purdue's #21 Blake Boarman in 3:56. It was the second time he's secured a fall against a ranked wrestler this year, defeating Nebraska's #5 Jacob Van Dee at the Navy Classic on Nov. 9.
- Lopez, Maximilian Leete (133), and Jack Maida (141) are a part of AU's impressive depth of lightweights. Alongside them are sophomore JJ Peace and redshirt sophomore Coen Bainey at 125 pounds, who both totaled double-digit wins last season and won dual matches last week at Purdue.
- In addition to that group, freshmen Colin Martin (133) and Leo Maestas (149) have already made an impression, with both of them placing at the ESU Open and winning dual matches last week.
- Along with Bainey, redshirt sophomores Kaden Milheim (157), Gage Owen (149), and Emmanuel Ulrich (285) are primed to play impactful roles after promising first seasons in 2024-25. The four of them combined for 81 dual points and were regular starters, with Gage Owen starting in each dual meet.
- The heavyweight Ulrich is filling in big shoes left by Will Jarrell, who graduated in 2025 as the team's MVP with over 70 wins in his career. So far this year, Ulrich is 4-4.
- Lopez, Leete, Campos, and Maida are this year's team captains. Leete and Lopez are serving in the role for the second straight season, while Campos and Maida are first-time captains.
- AU wrestling is coming off an accomplished 2024-25 season, posting the program's most wins since 2011 at 11-10 overall. The Eagles return four of their top five winners from last season, including #26 Raymond Lopez and #28 Caleb Campos.
