Men's Basketball Hosts Central Penn on Saturday Afternoon in Bender

WASHINGTON - Looking for another win in Bender Arena, American University men's basketball returns home to host Central Penn at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 15. The Eagles will play seven of their next eight contests at home, and already earned their first home win against Penn on Nov. 9.

  • Parking on campus is $10 per contest for games held after 5 p.m. on weekdays and all day on weekends, available through the PayByPhone app in any garage using code (211950).

Bender Bites and The Perch
  • The Perch has returned for a second year, offering a special section behind the north basket where fans ages 21 and over can purchase beer, wine and seltzers.
  • New this season to the concessions area is Bender Bites, in partnership with AU Kitchen. The menu is expanded from past offerings, and there will be multiple areas for purchasing food, snacks and drinks around the arena.
What to Know About American
  • American is playing its first of two non-Division I opponents and will also host DIII Marywood on Nov. 24.
  • The Eagles are coming off a blowout loss at George Washington after having beaten GW three straight times prior to Wednesday's game. Junior Greg Jones led AU with 14 points, while sophomore Wyatt Nausadis scored 13.
  • AU is 1-0 at home, leading for over 30 minutes on its way to an 84-78 defeat of Penn on Nov. 9.
  • Freshman Madden Collins wowed the Bender Arena crowd at his collegiate home debut, scoring 25 points including 17 in the second half to lead the Eagles. 
  • Sophomore Julen Iturbe scored a career-high 16 points against Penn, hitting 3-of-6 three-pointers.
  • In their season opener at Wake Forest, the Eagles lost 88-74 to the ACC powerhouse despite a career-high 22 points from Nausadis.
  • American is coming off a 22-13 season and the fourth Patriot League Championship in program history. 
  • Head coach Duane Simpkins returns for his third year at the helm of the program along with associate head coaches Nate Bollinger and Jackie Manuel, and assistant coach Isaiah Tate.
  • On this year's roster of 19, nine are true freshmen including six scholarship players. Collins is averaging 12.7 ppg, while Carson McDonald has a team-best 6.0 rebounds per game to go with 9.7 ppg.
What to Know About Central Penn
  • Central Penn is winless through its first four games, one of which was against Division I opponent Morgan State.
  • The Knights went 6-17 last season and are now under the direction of first-year head coach Kenton Alston.
  • Junior guards Connor Jenkins and Dahsan King lead the Knights with 16 points per game. Jenkins hit 5-of-10 three-pointers in an 89-82 loss against Penn State Schuylkill on Nov. 13. 
  • The Knights compete in USCAA Division II, an organization focused on smaller colleges and junior colleges. The USCAA does not provide athletic scholarships, but its members schools may offer other forms of financial aid.
