Volleyball Wins Seventh Consecutive Match, 3-1 Over Holy Cross

WASHINGTON - A double-double from Sophie Dufour led the American University volleyball team to a four-set victory over Holy Cross on Sunday afternoon, giving the Eagles their seventh win in a row. The freshman landed a season-high 20 kills, along with 14 digs while hitting .474 on an incredibly efficient afternoon. 

Notable
  • Dufour's double-double was her fifth of the season. She's now up to 245 total kills, second in the Patriot League. 
  • Salme Adeele Hollas followed Dufour with 13 kills, also hitting efficiently at .406. 
  • Deniz Dakak was busy distributing for AU, recording 46 assists for her second-most this season. 
  • Libero Bella Marrero had a versatile afternoon, adding a season-high four service aces and five assists to 18 digs. 
  • Prinzez Zeck led American up front, picking up six block assists and putting down six kills. 
  • Elise Sterling was reliable up front as well, hitting .643 on nine kills with a block assist.
  • The Eagles move to 7-1 in Patriot League play with the win, and 14-4 overall. AU is also 8-1 at home. 
How it Happened
  • The first set was comfortable for the Eagles, holding the Crusaders to single digits. 
  • After losing the first point, American won 14 in a row to grab a commanding lead and cruise to a 25-9 win. Marrero served during the 14-point run, having her way with three aces. 
  • AU remained in control in the second frame, taking it 25-14. The Eagles hit a scorching .524, led by six kills from Dufour. 
  • Holy Cross got out in front in the third set, taking a 15-13 lead. AU responded with a 7-3 run to take an 20-17 lead, but the Crusaders did not go away. 
  • With the score eventually 23-19, Holy Cross scored four unanswered to tie it up. After trading the next four points to make the score 25-25, Leah Talia stepped up for the visitors and put down a kill and service ace to give her team the 27-25 win. 
  • The Eagles responded in the fourth set, winning it handily at 25-16. Hollas, Sterling, Dufour, and Zeck had three kills each.

  • The Eagles will play Holy Cross again next Saturday, Oct. 18 at 3 p.m in Worcester.
