Volleyball Completes the Season Sweep of Holy Cross With 3-0 Win

WORCESTER, Mass. - The American University volleyball team continues to roll through Patriot League play, picking up another victory in straight sets over Holy Cross on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles have won eight in a row and remain in second place in the PL standings.

Notable
  • Sophie Dufour led AU's attacking effort, putting down 12 kills and hitting .409. It's the third match in a row that the freshman has hit above .400, and the fourth time she's eclipsed that percentage in her standout debut campaign.
  • Salme Adeele Hollas followed with 10 kills and seven digs, while Prinzez Zeck led the way up front for the Eagles. She went for six kills and hit .417, adding five block assists.
  • Elise Sterling hit efficiently from the middle as well, striking five kills with a .375 percentage.
  • Deniz Dakak was a dig away from a double-double, with nine and 24 assists on a quality night. Bella Marrero added nine digs of her own, along with three assists.
  • Dufour, Dakak, and Alex Ioannou all had a pair of aces, and Marrero contributed one.
  • The Eagles hit .274 as a team and committed just three reception errors.
How it Happened
  • The first set was the most competitive, with the score tied 15-15 in the second half of it. It was all AU from there, as the Eagles closed the set on an 11-4 run.
  • Hollas had four kills in the frame to lead American.
  • It was another late run that separated the Eagles from the Crusaders in the second set. With the score 16-13, AU bursted out on a 9-5 run.
  • Eight of the nine points were forced by American, with six kills and two blocks in addition to a bad set from Holy Cross.
  • The Eagles slammed the door shut in the third set, taking it with ease 25-11. They troubled the home side at the net, blocking five attack attempts. AU also swung it remarkably well, hitting .525.
  • Dufour had four kills in the final frame, followed by three from Hollas, and two each from Dakak, Zeck, and Sterling.
