Women's Swim & Dive Wins 10 of 11 Events; Earns First Victory Over ODU in 20+ Years

WASHINGTON - With wins in 10 of 11 events including a new pool record, the American University women's swimming & diving team came away with a dual meet win over Old Dominion for the first time in at least 22 years. It was a Senior Day split for the Eagles, who took one event on the men's side in a team loss to the Monarchs.

Notable Results 
  • The Eagles and Monarchs have faced each other many times since the days when both were competitors in the CAA, but ODU had always won against both the men and women until today.
  • American started strong with a record-setting foursome that set another one today. Piper Crosby, Marin Priddy, Mimi Watts and Lian Jeong Engle teamed up for a win and a pool-record swim in 1:44.79 in the women's 200 medley relay.
  • Kate Willliams followed with a victory in the women's 1,000 freestyle in 10:46.14.
  • Getting two individual wins for the women was Isabel McGovern, in both the 200 freestyle (1:55.04) and the 100 butterfly (57.25).
  • Watts earned a win in the women's 50 free in 23.81, and Jeong Engle took first in the women's 100 free (52.86).
  • On her Senior Day, Katie Yoo took the top spot in the women's 400 IM in 4:36.76. 
  • Two freshmen got individual wins with Demetra Bicos placing first in the women's 500 free in 5:12.92, and Priddy taking first in the women's 100 breaststroke in 1:06.43.
  • In the final event, the women's 400 free relay, the Eagles took first in 3:33.74 thanks to the foursome of Watts, Jeong Engle, McGovern, and freshman Grace Gilbert.
  • For the men's side, freshman Luke Martens was a winner in the 400 IM in 4:10.81. He was followed by freshman Cole Coffman in second place (4:12.13).
  • Colin Clough earned a pair of individual second-place finishes in the 100 freestyle and 100 breaststroke.
  • Watts, Jeong Engle, and McGovern all finished the day with three total wins.
Next Up
  • The final meet for the Eagles prior to the Patriot League Championships is next weekend as they head to Lewisburg, Pa., for the Bucknell Invitational at noon on Saturday, Feb. 1.
