Field Hockey Hosts Longwood Sunday for Mental Health Awareness Game

WASHINGTON – The American University field hockey team will be back home to host Longwood on Sunday, September 8 at 2 p.m. for a matchup at Jacobs Complex.
 
Sunday will be American's Mental Health Awareness Game.

INSIDE THE SERIES
  • American leads 7-0 in the all-time series that dates back to 1989.
  • The Eagles and the Lancers most recent matchup in 2017 overtime affair that AU won 3-2. Over the seven games, American has outscored Longwood by 29-5.
WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT AMERICAN
  • On Friday evening, American played JMU on the road, and the Eagles saw another double-overtime battle. AU fell in the 75th minute when the Dukes scored a penalty corner. Sophomores Sophie Willemse and Jordan Reicher were the goal scorers for American.
  • The Eagles are had an opening weekend against VCU and No. 7 Louisville that saw then drop both games in close contests.
  • Against VCU, neither team was able to find the back of the goal, heading first to overtime and then to double overtime. In the 72nd minute though, the Rams were able to capitalize on their second and third shots on goal in the entire contest. The first shot was saved, but the second was sent in past Bryn Underwood and the Eagles fell in game one.
  • When taking on No. 7 ranked Louisville, the Eagles struck first, in the tenth minute of the game when they won their first penalty corner. Sophomore Sarah Steinman inserted the corner and then posted up on the left side of the goal so when the ball came back to her from senior defender Tayla-Jade Weiss, she was able to corral it and send it past the keeper.
  • Not long later though the Cards responded, and the game was even at 1-all into halftime. The Cardinals scored twice more after halftime, and didn't allow anything through to take the game 3-1 over the Eagles.
WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT LONGWOOD
  • For the Lancers, the contest at Jacobs will be just their second of the season. Longwood opened at home versus Davidson on Friday and battled to a 2-1 result. The Lancers scored the game winning goal with eight seconds remaining in regulation. Zoe Tierney scored both goals, the second of which came from a penalty stroke.
  • Standout performer Zoe Tierney returns for the Lancers. The junior was amongst top goal-scorers for the squad in 2023 with four goals with an additional four assists and a defensive save to her line on the stat sheet.
  • Tierney is joined by senior Cara Obeirne and sophomore Luna Prieri. Both Obeirne and Prieri scored four goals in 2023. Obeirne, along with Tierney also tacked on four assists while Prieri notched two.
  • Defender Ireland McDermott had three goals, two assists, and an impressive four defensive saves for the Lancers in 2023 and along with Prieri earned All-MAC honors; McDermott was named to the Second Team while Prieri earned All-Freshman team honors.
  • The Lancers retained 16 players from the 2023 rosters and have 11 newcomers to their squad for 2024.
