Women’s Soccer Returns to Reeves Thursday, Hosts Richmond at Noon

WASHINGTON – In search of its first win of the season, American University women's soccer welcomes the University of Richmond Spiders to Reeves Field for a Thursday matchup. The Eagles are still in search of their first goal of the season as they look to Patriot League play next Saturday.

  • Thursday's meeting will be the 19th all-time meeting between the two teams. Richmond leads the all-time series, 13-5-0.

  • American is coming a 3-0 loss to Auburn on Sunday. The Eagles have yet to record their first win of the season or their first goal.
  • Juniors Julia Kato, Jordan Mahony, and Kadzban have all been named captains for the 2023 season.
  • Kato is one shutout away from moving into a tie for fifth all-time career shutouts in the AU record books. The junior currently has eight career shutouts and needs nine to make her mark at AU. She is currently tied for second in the league with Boston University's Celia Bruan and Lafayette's Lindsay Dewar in shutouts this season, with two.
  • Junior Amelie Kovacevic has played every single minute so far this season for the Eagles on the backline.
  • The Eagles return their leading scorer from last season, senior Izzy Kadzban, who netted four goals in her first season in D.C. They also return their assists leader in junior Olivia Simmons, who recorded two assists in her first season with the Eagles. 
  • Head Coach Marsha Harper enters her fourth season at the head of the program. She is joined once again on the sidelines by assistant coaches Katie Greenberg and Matt Freibaum.
WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT RICHMOND
  • Richmond enters Thursday's game coming off two-straight 0-0 draws. The Spiders battled to a scoreless draw against Radford on Thursday, Aug. 31 before battling to the same result on Sunday against Delaware.
  • The Spiders' lone goal of the season so far came from graduate student Molly Wierman. Wierman recorded her goal in Richmond's first game of the season at Longwood.
  • Richmond is led by Head Coach Adam Denton in his first season at the head of the program. He is joined on the sidelines by Associate Head Coach Meghan Gill and Assistant Coach Errin Stanton.
  • The Spiders return all three of their leading goal scorers from last season in Wierman, junior Emma Coleman, and sophomore Emma Shields. All three led the team in 2022 with two goals each. 
  • The Spiders were selected 10th out of 15 teams in the 2023 Atlantic 10 Conference Preseason Poll.
