WASHINGTON - Seven talented newcomers have joined the American University volleyball program for the upcoming 2023 season.
Kaitlyn Evans (Dallas, Texas/David W. Butler),
Holly Hopkins (Newport Beach, Calif./Mater Dei),
Maiden McLoughlin (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day School),
Sofia Osterdahl (Sollentuna, Stockholm/Ållebergsgymnasiet),
Milica Radicevic (Belgrade, Serbia/Iowa Western CC),
Carly Sciborski (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill) and
Madeline Stewart (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) are all set to be Eagles starting this fall.

KAITLYN EVANS
Dallas, Texas (David W. Butler) | Club: Carolina Union Volleyball Club
Middle Blocker | 5-11
- Plans to major in graphic and visual communication design at American
- Father, Patrick Scott, is a former NFL player for the Pittsburgh Steelers and Carolina Panthers (1994-98)
- Really likes to draw and loves volunteering at animal shelters because of her love of animals
Prior to AU...
- Played varsity all four years at David W. Butler High School
- Had the second-highest kill percentage
- Also a conference champion in the high jump for the track and field team, placing second at regionals and fourth in the state
- Team was conference qualifiers in volleyball and state qualifiers in track and field
Why she chose American: "I chose American University for the opportunity to explore, learn, and grow while making an impact on the global community. I also felt a connection with the volleyball team and I was really drawn to the coaches' welcoming demeanor."
HOLLY HOPKINS
Newport Beach, Calif. (Mater Dei) | Club: Balboa Bay Volleyball Club
Outside/Rightside Hitter | 6-0
- Plans to major in political science
- Performed over 80 community service hours during high school
- Worked for four years as a hostess at a local restaurant

- Named second team all-league as a senior at Mater Dei High School
- Also played for the Balboa Bay Volleyball Club and coach Pat Eaton
- Named Most Improved Player in indoor and beach volleyball teams
- Earned a 4.0 honors award for three years of high school.
Why she chose American: "I wanted to go to school back East, especially in Washington D.C."
MAIDEN MCLOUGHLIN
Charlotte, N.C. (Providence Day School) | Club: Carolina Union Volleyball Club
Outside Hitter | 5-11
- Plans to major in international studies
- Likes to read, spend time outside and hang out with friends
- Was involved in a dual diploma program that allowed her access to many service projects and led to her participating in organizations such as Second Harvest and the Bulb

- Two-time high school MVP
- Named to the all-conference first team as a sophomore and second team as a freshman
- Was named to the Ultra Ankle JVA Watchlist three times, and to the AVCA Phenom Watchlist three times.
Why she chose American: "I chose AU because all of the coaches and players were so kind and so welcoming; they have created such a healthy and fun environment that I cannot wait to become a part of! The school itself is amazing as well because it has all of the programs I want to study and the academic rigor that I was looking for in a school."

SOFIA ÖSTERDAHL
Sollentuna, Stockholm (Ållebergsgymnasiet) | Clubs: RIG Falköping & Sollentuna VK
Outside Hitter | 5-11
- Plans to pursue a major in the Kogod School of Business at American
- Went to a music school for seven years and can sing, play the guitar, the piano and bass
- Loves cooking and watching TV series and movies
- Has played volleyball for 12 years, and went to a volleyball high school (boarding school)
- Father, Mathias Österdahl, has been an assistant coach and team manager for the women's Swedish Junior National team and an assistant coach for the men's Swedish Junior National team

- Named to the all-star team at the U18 Swedish National Championships and at the U20 Swedish National Championships, both in 2021
- Named to the all-star team at the U23 Swedish National Championships in 2022
- Ranked sixth overall in blocking for the Elitserien (Sweden's highest division) in 2021-22
- Named Best Attacker at RIG, hitting .354 for the 2021-22
- Twice named "Player of the Match" in Elitserien
- Team captain for the Swedish Junior National Team in 2022
- Has played in a total of 30 international games for Sweden at the youth and junior level
- Sollentuna VK team was U18 Swedish National Champions, Swedish U19 Grand Prix Junior Champions and Swedish U20 National Champions
Why she chose American: "I chose AU because of
Barry Goldberg. He believed that I could accomplish anything, and he was very kind to me, but at the same time still realistic. Barry and the other coaches created a culture in the team that attracted me."
MILICA RADICEVIC
Belgrade, Serbia (Sixth Belgrade Grammar School) | Previous: Iowa Western CC
Setter | 6-0
- Plans to major in computer science at American
- Enjoys ice skating, cooking, watching movies and lifting

- Played for one season at Iowa Western Community College, seeing action in 30 matches and averaging 9.29 assists per set
- Also amassed 230 digs, 77 blocks, 28 aces and 40 kills
- Placed third at the Serbian Championships with her junior team
- Named Best Blocker in 2018 and Most Perspective Player in 2019
Why she chose American: "I chose this school because I can achieve my academic and volleyball goals at the same time. I also like the environment. I'm used to living in the big city and I think that Washington, D.C. has a lot to offer."
CARLY SCIBORSKI
Chapel Hill, N.C. (Chapel Hill) | Club: NC Volleyball Academy
Opposite/Rightside Hitter | 6-4
- Plans to major in communications at American

- Was all-conference MVP as a senior and was a two-time all-conference selection
- Team won the 3A State Championship in 2019
- Named to the PrepVolleyball Club Watchlist in 2023 and to the AVCA Phenom List three times
Why she chose American: "Seeing the family-like culture of the team and program in general drew me in immediately."
MADELINE STEWART
Annapolis, Md. (Broadneck) | Club: Paramount VBC
Setter | 6-1
- Enjoys art, going to concerts, working out, and being with friends and family
- Father, Chris, played basketball at Lenoir-Rhyne from 1995-99 and previously worked for American
- Brother, David, currently plays basketball at Colby College
- Uncle, Terrance, has been a Division I golf coach at UNC Greensboro since 2001

- Named to the Baltimore Sun All-Metro First Team in 2021 and 2022
- Named to the Washington Post All-Metro Second Team in 2022
- Named a Top 10 Team Player to Watch by the Washington Post
- Two-time team captain and 2022 Team MVP
- Capital Gazette First Team All-County in 2022 and Second Team All-County in 2021
- Amassed 750 assists, 192 digs, 126 kills and 31 blocks in 2021 and 2022
- Club Team Paramount VBC 18s was ranked 24th in the country out of 2,200 teams
- Had a 4.4 GPA as an AP and honors student
Why she chose American: "I chose AU because I love the location in DC and the size of the school. But the biggest reason is that I've always wanted to play for the volleyball team here at AU and play for Barry. I'm honored to be a part of this program, and I hope to make him proud in my years as an Eagle."
