BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Adding to a growing list of impressive honors, American University track senior
Row Sullivan has been named the Patriot League Scholar Athlete of the Year in their sport. Sullivan, who earned selection to the PL All-Academic Team for a third time, was joined by teammates junior
Ethan Puc as representation on the men's team, and juniors
Cassandra Daniele and
June Mwaniki on the women's team.
Sullivan earned their third appearance on the Outdoor Track & Field Academic All-League team just two weeks after finishing in fourth place in the men's 5000m run, scoring points for the Eagles squad, and eighth place in the 10000m run at the Patriot League Outdoor Championships. This outdoor season, Sullivan, at the Colonial Relays, was also part of the first ever AU relay team to run the 4x1500m relay race and set the pace for any AU quartets that come thereafter. The senior holds a cumulative 3.93 grade point average and recently graduated with their Bachelor's degree in Philosophy and Political Science with a focus in American Government.
Puc minted his name into the record books three times this outdoor season in three different relays. At the Colonial Relays, he was also part of the first ever AU relay team to run the 4x1500m relay race. At the Patriot League Outdoor Championships, Puc ran the third leg of the 4x400 relay, the team coming in fourth overall and notching seventh all-time in the American record books. To cap an already impressive junior season, Puc again ran the third leg of a relay, this time in the 4x800m, at the IC4A/ECAC Championships and helped the team break the previous school record, set in 2007, by two seconds. Puc holds a 3.71 cumulative GPA and is currently perusing an International Studies degree.
In the classroom, Mwaniki is currently studying for her Bachelor of Arts in International Studies and boasts a 3.68 overall GPA. A successful outdoor season that has seen Mwaniki put herself at fourth place in the AU record books in the 5000m when she recorded a 15 second personal record (PR) at the Virginia Challenge. She is also in fourth place in the books with her 10000m run time that she recorded at the Colonial Relays when she ran the distance for the first time and won a first-place finish. At the Patriot League Outdoor Championships, Mwaniki came in seventh in the 10000m run to score points for the Eagles and ninth in the 5000m run.
Daniele is no stranger to being amongst the names on the American top-10 performers lists. The Physics major with a 3.94 cumulative GPA has been amongst the group of women on the team that are building out the 400m hurdles starting list and has found herself at third on the list of performers in the event with her results at the Patriot League Outdoor Championships. Daniele is also an integral part of the relay teams, running the anchor leg in the 4x400m relay at the outdoor championships and the team is now etched at fifth all time in the books.
Voting for the Scholar-Athlete of the Year and All-Academic Team is done by the league's track and field sports information directors who are not eligible to vote for their own student-athletes.
To be eligible for the Scholar-Athlete of the Year award and the Academic All-Patriot League Team, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and be a starter or key player in his/her sport. Freshmen or students in their first academic year at their school are not eligible for the honor. These honors recognize student-athletes who excel in their sport and the classroom.
