HAMILTON, N.Y. – The American University cross country team faced off against the rest of the Patriot League pack on Saturday morning. Sophomore
Kaden Kluth paced the men's squad and finished 12th overall, earning a spot on the Men's Second Team All-League. This is Kluth's first time earning All-Patriot League honors. The men's team finished sixth in the team standings while the women finished seventh.
WOMEN
- For the 13th time in her AU career, senior June Mwaniki was the first place finisher for the Eagles, crossing 31st overall at 23:29.4.
- In a repeat of last year's league championships, Mwaniki was followed closely behind by classmate Callia Cordasco who finished second overall for American.
- First-year Estella Miller was the third place finisher for the Eagles. Miller came in 73rd overall, followed closely behind by Kirah Tianga a second later and Lucia Ianello four seconds after that.
- Tianga and Ianello came in 74th and 75th overall, to round out the top-five for the Eagles on the day.
MEN
- Kluth, leading the pack for the fourth time this season, and in his career, was the first place finisher for the Eagles and came in 12th overall. The finish was enough to earn a spot on the Men's Second Team All-League with his time of 25:16.9.
- Sean Stuck, for the second year in a row at the PL Championships, was AU's second-place finisher. Stuck finished 18th overall.
- Graduate student Row Sullivan was third across the finish line for American, followed three seconds later by sophomore Cooper Michaud, coming in 38th and 39th across the entire field of competition respectively.
- Rounding out the top five finishers for the Eagles was Carver Morgan. The sophomore came in 58th overall.
QUOTES FROM COACH GRAHAM
"Both teams ran strong today, but unfortunately, we didn't have the finish we were looking for in the end.
"On the women's side,
June Mwaniki and
Callia Cordasco raced very aggressively and strong. We had some unlucky losses with one athlete falling ill and another losing a shoe early on in the race. Finishing in seventh, just off of a sixth place finish last year, the women were disappointed. But they ran aggressively and had some very good races there within to build from.
"On the men's side, we had a similar result.
Kaden Kluth ran very well to lead the team with an All-Conference finish of 12th and was followed not too far behind by
Sean Stuck with his best race of the season. The team was in a very good spot at about 6000m, but let a few places slip in the 2000m.
"We were a good team today, but to beat the teams we're looking at, we need to be a great team. Those are improvements we'll continue to work on in preparation for the regional championships and then into the track seasons."
