Swim & Dive Teams Start Strong at Potomac Relays; Watts Breaks Her Own Pool Record

WASHINGTON - Highlighted by a new pool record for junior Mimi Watts, the American University swimming & diving teams had a solid start to the season on Friday as the Eagles hosted four other teams in the Potomac Relay Invitational. As a team, AU finished third on the women's side and fourth on the men's.

NOTABLE
  • Watts swam the leadoff leg of the 3x100 butterfly relay and came in with a time of 54.23, nearly a full second faster than her own previous pool record of 55.17.
  • The women's 200 medley relay "A" team of Watts, freshman Sophia Hemingway, junior Maddie Mara and sophomore Marissa Kleckner posted a second-place finish in a time of 1:46.41.
  • The men's duo of sophomore Seamus Brown and junior Griffin Young placed third in the 1000 free relay in 10:01.81.
  • Hemingway, sophomore Laura Laux and sophomore Sasha Uspenskaya finished third in the 300 backstroke relay in 2:57.83.
  • In the women's 300 breaststroke relay, Mara, senior Kenzie Cresci and freshman Grace Netz teamed up for a third-place finish in 3:22.97.
  • Two freshmen posted strong results in the diving competition at Georgetown. Peyton Thurman took third place on the 3-meter (210.75) and fourth on the 1-meter (213.05) while Rhys Davies was fourth on both the 3-meter (255.55) and 1-meter (260.85).
  • Davies' 1-meter score is the fourth-best in program history, while his 3-meter score ranks eighth.
  • Thurman's 3-meter score ranks ninth all-time while her 1-meter score is 11th-best all-time.
NEXT UP
  • On Saturday, Oct. 1, the Eagles will compete against each other in the annual Red/Blue Meet at 1 p.m. The first true competition will take AU to Loyola Maryland on Friday, Oct. 7, for a tri-meet that includes Boston College.
