Lacrosse Set to Host UMBC in Saturday Matinee

WASHINGTON - The American University lacrosse team (0-1) returns to Jacobs Complex this weekend to host UMBC (1-1) at 1 p.m. on Saturday in Eagles' second consecutive home game of the 2022 season.

HEALTH AND SAFETY PROTOCOLS
  • Individuals are required to wear masks to all American University athletics events, indoor and outdoor, per current AU guidelines.
  • We also encourage social distancing at all of our venues.
  • In order to protect and ensure the longevity of the Jacobs Complex turf for many great seasons to come, we ask your cooperation in refraining from bringing food, coffee or drink of any kind--aside from bottled water, onto the turf at all times.
  • Thank you for your cooperation and understanding, and for your support of AU lacrosse.
SERIES HISTORY
  • UMBC has dominated the 22-game series against AU with a 20-2 record dating back to the first meeting between the two teams on March 22, 1993, in Washington, D.C.
  • The Eagles' only home victory against the Retrievers was a 11-8 final on April 19, 2000. The last AU win was in Baltimore on March 12, 2003 (15-14 in overtime).

SCOUTING THE EAGLES

  • American opened its 2022 campaign on Saturday, Feb. 12, with a 20-8 loss to Georgetown at Jacobs Complex.
  • The Eagles opened with a strong first quarter, trailing the Hoyas by one behind a pair of early goals each from fifth-year seniors Emma Vinall and Kendall Goldblum, and the first career goal for freshman Maddy Spratt.
  • AU struggled to maintain the tempo coming out of the break, though, as Georgetown's offense began to pick up speed.
  • Vinall closed with a team-high five points, scoring four goals alongside an assist, followed by three goals from Goldblum.
  • Spratt, along with junior Emma Hare, pitched in two assists each.
  • The Eagles return 22 players from the 2021 squad, including four fifth-years and an eight-player senior class.
  • Vinall is among the highlights for the returners. The Fairfax, Va., native broke program records in career points (188) and goals (163) last season and will look to continue eclipsing the field in both categories while also approaching a third program record for career draw controls. With her eight against the Hoyas, she now sits only five away from tying Emily Maher's (2011-14) record of 188.
  • The program's first All-American in 2020, and the first Eagle since 2013 to be selected to the First Team All-Patriot League last year, Vinall closed last season ranked seventh among active Division I players for career scoring average (3.62), and 14th for points per game (4.18). She was named to her second consecutive Preseason All-Patriot League this season.
  • Vinall is one of four fifth-year seniors to return in 2022 along with Kendall Goldblum, Sarah Boney, and Cate Golden.
  • Goldblum needs only 27 goals and 55 points to add her name to the program's career top-five lists in both categories.
  • Eight seniors also highlight the returning Eagles' squad, including four starters from last season with defenders Haley Harkins and Ashley Go, and midfielders Katie Pierce and Stefanie Walsh.

SCOUTING THE RETRIEVERS

  • After opening the season with an absolutely dominant 21-3 win over Longwood on Feb. 12, UMBC picked up its first loss of the season on Wednesday with a tight 10-9 battle against Mount St. Mary's.
  • The Retrievers battled back from a 3-1 deficit in the first quarter, trading goal for goal before picking up a 6-5 lead by the end of the third.
  • The two teams went back-and-forth down the stretch until the Mount picked up the heartbreaker in the final minute.
  • Dymin Gerow leads UMBC with 10 points (9g, 1a) so far this season, followed by Claire Bockstie who returns after leading the team in 2021. She has seven points with six goals and an assist.
  • Megan Halczuk leads in the midfield with 13 draw controls while Kelly Brown has a team-high eight ground balls and four caused turnovers.
  • Lexi Roberts returns as the starting goalkeeper for UMBC. She has 10 saves after two games and a .455 save percentage.
  • The Retrievers were predicted to finish second in the America East behind Stony Brook. They return two 2021 First Team All-Conference selections in Claire Bockstie and Megan Halczuk, who broke program records in single-season and single-game draw controls last year and closed the season ranked seventh in Division I in draw controls per game (8.67). They also bring back two Second Team honorees in Dymin Gerow and Kennedy Evans.
