WASHINGTON - The American University track team will be taking a lot of momentum into the Patriot League Indoor Championships in two weeks, as the Eagles closed the regular season with a slew of personal record marks at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational in Boston, Mass., and the VMI Winter Classic in Lexington, Va.
HEAR FROM COACH GRAHAM
"I'm very happy with this weekend at both meets. We came out with a lot of PR's across a lot of different events. The men and women are starting to see the work pay off but more importantly, they are now racing in a way that will get us to the goals we've set. There is still work to be done and a few more pieces to put into place. We have two weeks until the indoor championships and we'll take advantage of every one of those days."
- The Eagles divided between the two meets on Friday and Saturday with six athletes traveling to the prestigious Valentine Invitational in Boston while 13 stayed closer to home with the VMI Winter Classic.
- The personal record (PR) times started rolling in right off the bat on Friday evening with junior Rachael Potter smashing through her previous 3000m PR from earlier this season (10:43.03) in Boston with a 10:32.25 finish for second in her section.
- Down at VMI, freshman Neev Agarwal opened events with a career-best of her own, hitting 8.75 in the 60m dash for the first of her two PR's on the weekend. She was back in the blocks on Saturday and ducked under her previous top 200m dash time with a 29.14 crossing.
- Junior Eva Gibson joined her with a new 1000m PR (1:30.53) while freshman Brian Gutro highlighted the men's side with a new top time in the 400m dash (53.56). Gutro also added a PR on Saturday, crossing in 23.72 for 200m.
- Saturday started back up in Boston with senior Aidan Caggiano taking the track first thing in the morning in the men's 3000m. He pulled away from the rest of the field in his section to cross first with a new PR of 8:32.98.
- Junior Russell Sullivan narrowly missed adding their name to the program's all-time top-10 with a PR finish of 14:31.10 in the 5000m - less than one second from John Pope's 14:30.58.
- PR's abounded in the men's mile, with two Eagles earning new top times in Boston while two more did the same at VMI. In Boston, junior Nathan Reeves broke away from the pack about 500m in and cruised to win his section in 4:12.35. Sophomore Oscar Counsell also came through with a section win, coming from behind to pick up a new PR of 4:15.94.
- In Lexington, freshman Alex Murphy led the Eagles' pack with a 4:19.93 finish for eighth in the field. Sophomore Foster Boone followed with a new PR time of 4:36.23.
- Sophomore Kylie Raymond closed events in Lexington with a ninth-place finish in the 3000m run, crossing in PR fashion (10:56.51).
