FAIRFAX, Va. - One win for junior Mimi Watts and two near school-record relays were the highlights of day one for American University men's and women's swimming & diving at the Patriot Invitational. The three-day meet, with six women's teams and five men's teams competing, continues on Friday and Saturday.

NOTABLE

• Watts went 22.83 in the finals of the 50 freestyle to get the win among over 40 who swam the event in prelims and 24 in the finals. It's just 11 hundredths of a second off her own school record of 22.72.
• Junior Nick Buckley improved from third in the prelims of the 50 free to finish second overall in 20.28, just eight hundredths of a second off his school record of 20.20.
• In seven other events, the Eagles posted new top-16 times in program history.
• Sophomore Aidan Delehanty swam a PR of 21.04 in the 50 free prelims which ranks 12th all-time at AU, and ended up finishing 14th overall in 21.07.
• The women's 400 medley relay team of freshman Sophia Hemingway, junior Maddie Mara, Watts and sophomore Marissa Kleckner went 3:48.00 to take fourth place, just missing the school record of 3:47.39 but recording the second-fastest time in the history of the program.
• Juniors Caleb Farris, Will Deitch and Buckley, along with Delehanty, teamed up for a fifth-place finish in the 200 free relay in 1:22.09 which ranks second-best all-time at American.
• The men's 400 medley relay team of juniors Aldrich Elvambuena, Will Timme, Farris and Buckley took fifth place in 3:24.27 which ties for 10th-best all-time. 
• Senior Kayla Winters swam a PR in the 500 free prelims and then bettered it in the final, going 5:05.06 to rank 13th all-time among the fastest personal bests in program history. She took second place in the "B" final, and 10th overall. 
• Watts, freshman Avery Barber, senior Ella Thompson and Kleckner took fifth in the 200 free relay, with their time of 1:35.25 ranking fourth-best all-time.
• Barber had another top-16 time individually, finishing the 50 free in 24.23 to rank 14th all-time and place in a tie for 18th overall.

• The Eagles have two more days of competition at the Patriot Invitational. Friday's events include the 400 IM, 100 Fly, 200 Free, 100 Breast, 100 Back, 200 medley relay, 800 free relay, women's 3 meter and men's 1 meter.
