No. 2 Seeded Field Hockey Set to Host No. 3 Seed Lehigh in PL Semifinal

WASHINGTON – The American University field hockey team are opening post season play at home this week as the No. 2 seed in the Patriot League Tournament. The Eagles (9-6, 4-2 PL) will host three-seed Lehigh (11-7, 4-2 PL) at 2 p.m. on Thursday in the second semifinal game of the day. No. 1 seed Boston University (9-8, 5-1 PL) and No. 4 seed Bucknell (5-12, 3-3 PL) will kick off the action for the day at 11 a.m.
 
The winners of the two games will meet in the Patriot League Championship game at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 5, at Jacobs Complex.

  • In a series that dates to 2003, American holds the edge over Lehigh with a 24-0 series lead.
  • The last time out, the Eagles defeated the Mountain Hawks 3-1 on October 14 at home here in Washington.
WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT AMERICAN
  • The Eagles are coming off an exciting 2-1 win over William & Mary. The two American goals were scored in the final ten minutes of the game. The first was scored by rookie Frederiek Thierry and the second by senior Megan Hoffman, her fourth of the season.
  • In league play, American finished in second place with a 4-2 PL record, 9-6 overall behind Boston University who claimed a 5-1 PL record and a 9-8 overall record.
  • Goalkeeper Bryn Underwood boasts a league-leading in goals against average (1.328), saves (81), and shutouts per game (.286) with four shutouts for the season. She's also second in the league for saves per game (5.89).
  • Offensively, the Eagles are led by sophomore Federica Turina Dellamaggiore with 11 goals, and senior Charllene Boshoff with eight goals. The two combined have 5 game-winning goals.
 
WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT LEHIGH
  • In their regular season-finale, Lehigh fell 2-1 to Columbia.
  • The Mountain Hawks finished the regular season with an overall record of 11-7, tying the same number of wins they had a season ago.
  • This is the first time since 1985-86 that the program has reached double-digit wins in back-to-back years and won at least 11 games since 1984-85.
  • The Mountain Hawks' senior Sarah Bonthuis finished the regular season second in the league for shots (71) and shots on goal (39). She also finished fourth in the league for goals with 10, and second in the league for assists (10), game winning goals (4), and points (30).
  • Lehigh's keeper, Maddie Kahn, finished regular season play with three shutouts to her line on the stat sheet, third in the league in the category. She also finished first in the league for saves per game with 5.89.
MAJOR AWARDS
  • Junior Bryn Underwood was selected for her third consecutive PL major award as the league's Goalkeeper of the Year, her second year receiving the award in a row.
  • This also marks her second All-Patriot League First Team nod.
  • All-League honors were awarded to three other Eagles including First Team nods to Federica Turina Dellamaggiore and Charllene Boshoff, and Second Team honors to freshman Lotta Curanz.
  • Turina Dellamaggiore is second in the league for goals (11), third in the category for game-winning goals (3), and third in total points accumulated (25).
  • Boshoff finished regular season play with eight goals, two of which were game winners. She accumulated 16 total points overall.
  • Curanz, the freshman from Berlin, had five assists, two goals, two defensive saves, and nine total points for the season.
