Men's Soccer Returns to Patriot League Action Saturday Against Holy Cross

WASHINGTON – American University men's soccer returns to Patriot League action on Saturday, Oct. 15 as the Holy Cross Crusaders come to Reeves for a 1 p.m. game. American enters the weekend coming off a 2-2 draw with nonconference opponent James Madison while Holy Cross enters the game coming off a 2-1 loss to Loyola Maryland.

INSIDE THE SERIES
  • American leads the all-time series 11-8-3.
  • The last meeting between the two squads was on Sept. 18, 2021 in Worcester, Mass. Holy Cross won the meeting 2-1.
  • The last meeting between the Eagles and Crusaders at Reeves was on Oct. 13, 2018. American won the meeting 2-1.
  • Prior to American's loss to Holy Cross last season, the Eagles had won the previous seven meetings.
WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT AMERICAN
  • American enters Saturday's game with a 5-3-4 overall record and a 3-1-1 mark in Patriot League action. The Eagles currently sit in first in the Patriot League standings. Army West Point also holds a 3-1-1 record but American holds the tie-breaker over the Black Knights due to their 1-0 win in West Point earlier this season.
  • The Eagles are coming off a 2-2 draw with nonconference opponent James Madison University on Tuesday. Junior Nevin Baer netted the Eagles first goal in the 66th minute and junior Robbie Matei netted the equalizer in the 89th minute off a penalty kick.
  • For Baer it was his first goal of the season and for Matei it was his third.
  • American has had nine different goal scorers so far this season. Matei leads the way with a team-high three, sophomore Zemi Rodriguez, junior Evan Schweickert and junior Ethan Boyle each have two, and freshman Troy Elgersma, senior Mattias Cooper, senior Jack Green, junior Nevin Baer, and sophomore Dilane Zounatcha each have found the back of the net once this season.
  • Elgersma leads the squad with a team-high four assists. Cooper and Green are right behind him with two each.  
  • Sophomore Dominic Dominguez has now received the starting nod in the Eagles last three games. He picked up Patriot League shutouts over Army (1-0) and Colgate (3-0) and earned the draw with James Madison on Tuesday.
  • After Saturday's game, American will travel to Newark, Del., on Tuesday, Oct. 18 to play Delaware for its final nonconference test of the regular season. The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT HOLY CROSS
  • Holy Cross comes into Saturday's game with a 4-7-2 overall record and an 0-4-1 record in Patriot League action.
  • They are most recently coming off a 2-1 loss to Loyola Md. on Saturday, Oct. 8. Senior Bergin Kranz had the Crusader's lone goal of the game in the 55th minute. Kranz has scored three goals in the last six games.
  • Sophomore Evan Jones and senior Jack Ostrosky lead the team in goals with four each while sophomore Jon Klein and Marcus Williams have a team-leading four assists each.
  • Senior Matt McGonigle, Ostrosky, and senior Taj Salawu are the Crusaders' captains this season.
  • After Saturday's game, Holy Cross will travel to Cambridge, Mass. to take on Harvard for its final nonconference game of the season.  
PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
  • Juniors Mike Bleeker and Ethan Boyle were named the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week and Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week, respectively, the league office announced Monday morning.
  • Bleeker and Boyle join freshman Troy Elgersma and junior Evan Schweickert in receiving Patriot League weekly honors this season. Elgersma was named the league's Rookie of the Week on Sept. 26 and Schweickert was named the league's Midfielder of the Week on Sept. 26 and Oct. 3.

ENHANCED CONCESSIONS FOR WEEKEND HOME GAMES
  • AU Athletics has partnered with Gregorio's Trattoria to provide an enhanced concessions menu for all home weekend men's and women's soccer contests at Reeves this fall.  The gates to Reeves Field, and the Gregorio's grill station will open one hour prior to kickoff at each remaining Saturday and Sunday afternoon home games this fall. 
  • Fans can enjoy Gregorio's favorites from the grill station to the left of the Reeves Field bleachers including menu selections of freshly grilled burgers, Italian sausage and peppers, all-beef hot dogs, and a selection of cold Pepsi and Gatorade beverages.
