BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After a 2-0 win over George Washington on Sunday, freshmen
Jordan Mahony and
Julia Kato were each honored with a weekly award, the Patriot League announced on Monday.
Mahony was named Defensive Player of the Week while Kato was named Goalkeeper of the Week. It's the first time either player has been honored by the league in their short time at AU.
Mahony recorded her first career assist on what turned out to be the game-winning goal against the Colonials. She was also part of the backline that recorded its second straight shutout and picked up a key kick save to keep GW scoreless late in the game. Mahony is the first Eagle to win Defensive Player of the Week since Charly Slavick on Aug. 26, 2019.
Kato was stout between the pipes, picking up a career-high nine saves while facing 21 shots on Sunday. She has now held opponents scoreless for 233 minutes, which is just outside the program's all-time Top 5 for consecutive shutout minutes. Kato is the first Eagle to win Goalkeeper of the Week since Charlene Belanger on Sept. 8, 2015.
Both women played a crucial part in helping AU defeat George Washington on the road for the first time since 2004 and extend their winning streak to three games for the first time since 2018.
The Eagles return to Reeves Field on Thursday, Sept. 9 to take on Old Dominion. Kick-off is at 4 pm. American will be looking to extend their winning streak to four games for the first time since 2012.
