Women’s Soccer Denied Late in 2-2 Draw at Lehigh

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Just over three minutes separated American University women's soccer from its first win of the season before Lehigh found a late equalizer in a 2-2 draw on Sunday afternoon. Senior Lauren Sanders scored AU's first goal in the 36th minute, and senior Bella Vozar gave the Eagles a 2-1 lead with 13 minutes remaining.

Notable
  • American finishes the week with a pair of 2-2 draws at Loyola Maryland and Lehigh, each good for one point in the Patriot League standings.
  • The goal for Sanders was her third of the season and fourth of her career.
  • Vozar scored for the first time this season and fourth time in her career as well. Assisting on Vozar's goal was sophomore Natalia Croce for the first time in her career.
  • Freshman Riley Molbury finished with seven saves, including a few big stops in the second half.
How it Happened
  • Lehigh started the scoring with a 19th-minute goal by Paige Place, perfectly sent in just under the crossbar and out of reach of Molbury.
  • Vozar had her first chance of the game in the 23rd minute, heading a ball off a corner that was saved by Lehigh's Chloe Zipprich.
  • The Mountain Hawks had another chance in the 25th minute that was saved by Molbury and then cleared well by Croce.
  • Senior Bella Miller sent in a chance in the 34th minute that Sanders took a shot on, but was it was blocked, and the Eagles came up with nothing on the resulting corner.
  • Just two minutes later, in the 36th minute, freshman Piper Garcia sent a ball out wide to Sanders who beat one defender and then took a chance with a long, crossing shot.
  • That chance paid off, as the ball looked to be going wide but instead found the far right corner, not needing the second touch from a diving Vozar who followed it into the net.
  • In the 38th minute, a strong shot from the top of the box by freshman Julianna Critchley would have easily sailed past the Lehigh keeper, but instead bounced off the left post.
  • Molbury made her third save of the half with just over a minute left to keep the game tied 1-1 heading into the break.
  • The Eagles wasted no time getting on offense in the second half, but a shot 12 seconds in by freshman Julia Zeug went wide.
  • Back-to-back saves for Molbury in the 51st minute kept the game tied.
  • American's free kick led to a scoring chance with 20 minutes left, but a shot from junior Maddie Hurowitz sailed just high.
  • With 14 minutes left, Sanders tried another long chance with a strong shot from well outside the top of the box, but it just barely missed on the right side.
  • The Eagles persistence on offense paid off with a free kick in the 78th minute. Croce sent a perfect ball towards the net, and Vozar barely redirected with her head to put American ahead, 2-1.
  • With less than four minutes remaining, a free kick was passed twice and then led to the equalizing goal for Lehigh's Aminah Baruwa who took a crossing shot into the lower left corner.
  • The Eagles blocked a go-ahead shot by the Mountain Hawks with a minute and a half left, and neither team got another shot off in the remaining time.
 Up Next
  • The Eagles will return home next Saturday, Oct. 10, facing Colgate for Senior Day at 1 p.m.
