Field Hockey Drops Overtime Heartbreaker to No. 18 Old Dominion

WASHINGTON - The American University field hockey team fell just short of back-to-back overtime victories against ranked opponents on Sunday with a 3-2 loss to No. 18 Old Dominion in the sixth minute of extra time.

HEAR FROM COACH JENNINGS
"We did some great things today and had some very good passages of play. I love the way we started and the way we battled back to force overtime. ODU is an excellent team and it was a match that could have gone either way. I'm very proud of our effort, despite the result. Games like this can teach us a great deal about ourselves and I know we will use it to prepare for a great match against Delaware."

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • AU entered the Sunday matinee after a quick turnaround from the season opening win over No. 23 VCU on Friday. That game also went into extra time with freshman Federica Turina Dellamaggiore scoring the equalizer and junior Charllene Boshoff clinching the game winner in the 62nd minute.
  • Sunday was an even battle start to finish with both teams getting off 10 shots. AU held a slight edge with seven shots on goal to ODU's six but the Monarchs led with seven corner opportunities while American drew only three.
  • The Eagles were the first to get on the board against the Monarchs midway through the first quarter. Senior Noor Coenen connected on a pass from sophomore Imogen Hatton for her first goal of the season. Hatton would later deliver AU its equalizer, this time off a pass from Coenen, to send the game into overtime.
  • The AU defense held off a flurry of ODU attacks late in the first quarter, including a clutch save from sophomore goalkeeper Bryn Underwood, to enter the break with the lead intact. Underwood closed the day with three saves.
  • American had an early look at goal to open the second stanza, as Dellamaggiore looked to get on the board for the second consecutive game. But ODU goalkeeper Cam MacGillivray came away with her third of five saves on the day to hold the Eagles at bay.
  • The Monarchs found the equalizer a few minutes later with a goal from Meghan Smart after a penalty corner opportunity. The Eagles were called for a foul during another ODU corner in the 23rd minute, putting the Monarchs' Delphine Le Juene on the line for a penalty stroke and the 2-1 lead.
  • American's offense recovered in the third quarter and dominated play with four shots, but fell just shy of tying the game until the third minute of the fourth when a redirect from Hatton after a long ball in from Coenen pulled AU even at 2-2.
  • Once again the Eagles' defense came in clutch late in the quarter, holding off an ODU penalty corner to push the game into extra time.
  • AU had some early looks in OT but couldn't quite break through ODU's defensive line. A pair of quick saves from Underwood kept the Eagles alive but the Monarchs once again capitalized on a corner opportunity with a goal from Marlon de Bruijne to close the game.
UP NEXT
  • American's three-game road stand will close on Friday, September 3, with a 6 p.m. start at Delaware. The Eagles will make their home debut at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 5, against William & Mary.
