Field Hockey Battles but Falls 2-0 at No. 17 Delaware

WASHINGTON - The opportunities were earned but ultimately not capitalized on for American University field hockey as the Eagles (1-2) were handed a 2-0 road loss at #17 Delaware (2-1) on Friday evening.

HEAR FROM COACH JENNINGS
  • "We played a great game tonight against a very talented and well-coached Delaware team. We were unlucky not to score in several situations but we never put our heads down, and we continued to press. The fourth quarter was a testament to our team's heart and skill as we were dominant throughout. We will learn some hard lessons from this encounter and work hard to continue to improve. I am super proud of our effort tonight."
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • AU finished with seven shots on goal to the Blue Hens' five, but Delaware goalkeeper Lizzie Gaebel stopped all seven in an impressive shutout performance.
  • Senior Noor Coenen was on the attack throughout the second half, taking half of the Eagles' 12 total shots including three on goal.
  • Coenen and senior Aidan Rossman both had shots saved in the final two minutes of the contest.
  • Delaware's first goal came in the 18th minute by Femke Strein, and the Blue Hens took a 1-0 lead into halftime.
  • Less than five minutes into the second half, Delaware scored on a penalty corner for a 2-0 lead that would stand as the final score.
  • In total, the Eagles' offense earned nine penalty corners compared to six for Delaware. Four of AU's corners came in the fourth period as they turned up the pressure.
UP NEXT
  • After starting the season with three games on the road, the Eagles will host their home opener on Sunday, Sept. 5 at 1 p.m. against William & Mary.
