WASHINGTON - The American University lacrosse team is back on the road this weekend for the Patriot League opener at No. 14 Loyola Maryland on Saturday, March 6, at noon.
SERIES HISTORY
- American trails Loyola Maryland, one of the perennial powerhouses in women's lacrosse, 21-0. The two teams first met on March 31, 1992, in Washington, D.C.
- The Greyhounds lead on their home field, 10-0.
SCOUTING THE EAGLES
- American opened the 2021 campaign on Saturday, Feb. 27, with a 19-9 loss at Mount St. Mary's. The first game in nearly a year for the Eagles, they kept tight with the Mountaineers until the Mount pulled away with a six-goal run in the final 12 minutes of the first half.
- Senior Emma Vinall led American with six goals and eight draw controls, including a perfect 3-for-3 in free position opportunities.
- Seniors Casey Harkins and Erica Skowron and junior Stefanie Walsh also contributed a goal each while Skowron also led the team with a pair of assists.
- Freshman Lizzie de Guzman also added an assist in her AU debut.
- The highly-anticipated 2021 AU slate comes on the heels of one of the most historic seasons in program history after the squad earned the program's first undefeated nonconference season at 7-0 in 2020.
- All but two starters return from that squad, including 2020 All-American and 2021 Preseason All-American, Emma Vinall.
- Other key returners include seniors Casey Harkins and Kendall Goldblum, who each closed the season sitting amongst the the leaders in the national rankings.
SCOUTING THE GREYHOUNDS
- Loyola came into the season atop of the Patriot League preseason rankings and in 4th on the IWLCA Division I Preseason Coaches Poll. Since they've dropped to No. 14 in the IWLCA rankings after dropping their first two games o fthe season to #3 Syracuse, 18-6, and Towson, 13-7. They picked up their first win of the slate on Wednesday with an 18-6 win over Villanova.
- A pair of Greyhounds picked up preseason Patriot League honors with Livy Rosenzweig selected as Offensive Player of the Year and Katie Detwiler earning Defensive Player of the Year. Sam Fiedler, Elli Kluegel, and Jillian Wilson were also voted onto the Preseason All-League Team.
- Fiedler and Rosenzweig lead the team with 13 points each after the first three games. Fiedler has a team-high 11 goals along with a pair of assists while Rosenzweig leads with seven assists alongside her six goals. Rosenzweig also leads in the circle with 11 draw controls.
- Kluegel leads with 10 ground balls followed by seven from Meaghan Quinn, who also has a team-high five caused turnovers.
- Rosenzweig led Loyola with nine points against Villanova, tying her career-high, and bested her previous personal record with six goals. Fiedler added another seven points, followed by Jillian Wilson's career-high five points, and Kluegel's four points. Holly Lloyd, Emily Wills, Liz Scott, and Emily Beier also contributed to the Greyhounds' final tally.
WELCOME, COACH TEETERS
- The American University Department of Athletics announced the hiring of Lindsay Teeters the AU lacrosse program's 10th head coach on June 9, 2020.Â
- For the past six years, Teeters has been in the club and high school ranks after spending seven years as an assistant coach on the college level at James Madison (2006-09), George Washington (2009-10), and Virginia Tech. (2010-13).
- Teeters helped lead the Hokies to back-to-back winning seasons for the first time in program history and was promoted to associate head coach in her final season. Among those wins were victories over No. 16 Boston College and No. 7 Virginia.
- A successful player in her own right, Teeters was a Team USA selection from 2007-09. She also worked for Team USA as the National Teams Manager at US Lacrosse in 2013.
- Teeters was a four-year starter at Boston University and a two-time IWLCA All-American after helping the Terriers to three American East titles and three NCAA Tournament appearances, including a quarterfinal run in 2005. She was a four-time America East All-Conference selection, a four-time IWLCA All-Region honoree, and graduated as the program's all-time leading scorer in 2006 with 187 goals. She earned her bachelor's degree in hospitality management.
- Teeters currently lives in Ellicott City, Md., with her husband Matt and two daughters, Lewis and Weston.
NEXT UP...
American will make their home debut on Wednesday, March 10, with a noon draw against crosstown rival George Washington. The game will be the first of four consecutive home contests for the Eagles, as they prepare to host Lehigh on March 13, Navy on March 20, and Longwood on March 24.
