Men’s Soccer Looking for Repeat in Patriot League Final at Loyola

WASHINGTON – American University men's soccer is set to travel up I-95 to take on Loyola Maryland on Saturday for a chance to repeat as Patriot League champions for the first time in program history.

QUICK INFO
  • Date/Time: Saturday, November 13, 12:00 p.m.
  • Site: Baltimore, Md. (Ridley Athletic Complex)
  • Series History: Loyola leads, 28-17-6

INSIDE THE SERIES
  • For the second straight season, American is playing Loyola Maryland on the road in the Patriot League Tournament. The Eagles came out victorious in the spring 3-2 in the PL semifinals.
  • For the fifth time in six meetings, this matchup will take place in Baltimore.
  • AU won its first two Patriot League Tournament road games in program history last spring, topping Loyola and then Lafayette to earn its first title in 17 years.
WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT AMERICAN
  • Since a 3-0 loss to these Loyola Greyhounds on Oct. 12, American finished the season on a tear. Boasting a four-match winning streak and a six-game unbeaten streak, the Eagles are carrying a lot of momentum into the championship game. AU is also 8-1-2 in their last 11 matches.
  • With a win, the Eagles would win back-to-back Patriot League titles for the first time in program history. It would be their fourth PL title and would mark the first time winning consecutive conference titles since 1984 and 1985 (CAA).
  • American is coming off perhaps its most complete performance of the season in a controlling 4-2 win over Navy on Tuesday at Reeves Field. It was the most goals scored by an AU side since winning 5-2 against Cornell on Sept. 11, 2016.
  • Mattias Cooper, a junior transfer from Elon, has been a crucial bench player for the Eagles down the stretch. He has five assists in his last three games, including three helpers in the win over Navy. It was the first time an AU player had three assists in a game since Max Holdsworth in the aforementioned game against Cornell on Sept. 11, 2016. Cooper now sits at seven assists on the season, just two away from cracking the program's all-time top 10 in the category.
  • David Coly and Nicolas Blassou earned spots on the All-Patriot League First Team for the first times in their career. Coly leads AU with 19 points (7G, 5A), while Blassou has anchored the backline all season. Evan Schweickert and Zemi Rodriguez were named All-Patriot League Third Team for their efforts. Rodriguez is the first freshman in program history to be named to an All-Patriot League Team.
  • Dominic Dominguez has come on strong between the pipes since the start of conference play. Since stepping into the lineup against Lehigh, he holds a 1.06 GAA and a .773 save percentage, which leads the Patriot League. He missed the last 20 minutes of the Bucknell match and all of the Boston University match due to injury, but has been a key part of AU's success in the last two months of the season.
WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT LOYOLA
  • Loyola advanced 7-6 on penalties following a scoreless draw against No. 6 Army West Point in the semifinals. The Greyhounds will compete for its first conference title since 2009 on Saturday.
  • With Tuesday's clean sheet vs. Army, Loyola has recorded four straight shutouts for the first time since a four-game run from Oct. 7-21 in 2011. The Greyhounds' overall shutout streak of 388:35 minutes, dating back to the 85th minute of a non-conference game at Wake Forest on Oct. 19, is their longest since keeping opponents off the scoreboard for 455:40 during that 2011 stretch. Loyola has posted six straight clean sheets against Patriot League opponents, a streak which began with a 3-0 home win over American on Oct. 12.
  • Justin Ingram (6 G, 9 A) and Kelan Swales (7 G, 4 A) have factored in 18 of Loyola's 25 goals on the year. Daniel Tshiani (3 G, 1 A), Matthew Lala (2 G, 2 A) and Loc San (2 G, 1 A) rank third through fifth on the team in scoring.
INTERNATIONAL EAGLES
  • With its remarkable location in Washington, D.C., American has long attracted students from all around the globe. The men's soccer program is no different.
  • The program boasts players from England (Malachy McGovern), Senegal (David Coly), Cameroon (Jerry Zouantcha), Sweden (Viggo Sjoberg), and Norway (Mattias Cooper).
  • Several others on the team have immediate family ties internationally, which makes for a diverse group of guys playing the beautiful game.
OH, BROTHER
  • Jerry Zouantcha returned to AU for a fifth season this fall and gets a nice treat as a result. He will get to play alongside his younger brother, Dilane.
  • Dilane scored his first career goal against Old Dominion in his first career game, while Jerry waited until his sophomore season to find the back of the net.
  • AU Men's Soccer has a proud history of brothers, most notably the Kuykendalls. Kris, Shawn, and JP all played for the Eagles in the early 2000s, leading AU to the NCAA Tournament in 2001, 2002, and 2004.
  • Their father, Kurt, was an All-American goalkeeper for AU in the 1970s and is enshrined in the Cassell Hall of Fame alongside his late son, Shawn.
