WASHINGTON - For her efforts in helping the 22nd-ranked American University field hockey team to a pair of wins, senior goalkeeper
Dani Acuna has been named the
GEICO Student-Athlete of the Week for the week of Oct. 11-17.
Acuna entered her senior day weekend with 15 minutes played and zero saves in her career. By Sunday evening, she had six saves in 75 minutes of play after helping lead the Eagles to a 2-0 weekend with wins over Holy Cross and Cornell.
She earned three saves in her 15 minutes of action during AU's 6-0 rout against Holy Cross on Saturday, and followed that up with her first career start during Senior Day on Sunday. In that contest, Acuna played the full 60 minutes against a tough Cornell squad. She nearly earned her first career shutout with three saves during the 3-1 victory over the Big Red.
American will close the regular season on the road with games at Boston University on October 23, and Colgate on October 30. The Eagles will need to win just one of the two remaining games to secure the Patriot League regular season title and right to host in the postseason.Â
