WASHINGTON - After achieving a third-place finish at the 116th EIWA Championships, American University redshirt junior wrestler
Tanner Harvey was named the GEICO Student-Athlete of the Week.
Harvey added to his EIWA hardware after taking fourth place a year ago, and will make his second appearance at the NCAA Championships in as many seasons at AU.
He used a six-point third period, including riding time, to advance to the quarterfinals over Navy's Andrew Buckley. After a 3-2 lead heading into the third, a big takedown propelled Harvey to a strong finish and a 9-2 win. The quarterfinals went even better for Harvey. He led 5-2 with a takedown in each of the first two periods, and exploded in the final seconds with a takedown and four back points for a 15-4 major decision to advance to the semifinals.
To start the second day, Harvey lost 3-2 in the championship semifinals to Lou DePrez, falling to the Binghamton wrestler by a narrow margin for the second time this season and second time in two years at the EIWAs. Harvey appeared to get a takedown in the final second, but a challenge was not successful.
The consolation semifinals saw Harvey get some redemption. He set the tone with two first-period takedowns and went on to defeat Princeton's Travis Stefanik, 13-6 to assure his NCAA berth and earn a chance to wrestle for third place.
Facing Army's Noah Stewart in the third-place bout, Harvey led just 2-1 heading into the third period. Stewart scored a late takedown to force overtime at 3-3, but Harvey recovered with a strong move that got him a takedown and back points for a 9-3 victory.
