WASHINGTON - With a perfect 4-0 record on the line, the American University lacrosse team will host Long Island University at noon on Saturday, Feb. 29. The Eagles are already off to their best start since 2012, and one more win would make it the best start in program history.
SCOUTING THE EAGLES
- With 19.75 goals per game, AU tops the Patriot League and ranks third in NCAA Division I in scoring offense.
- Junior Emma Vinall leads all players in the nation with 5.75 goals per game (23 total) and scored a career-high seven goals, including the late game-winner, in the Eagles' 20-19 win at Longwood on Feb. 22.
- Vinall also averages 9.00 draw controls per game to lead the PL and tie for third in the nation.
- With 3.75 assists per game (15 total), senior Casey Harkins leads the PL and ranks fourth in Division I. Harkins set a program record with seven assists in AU's 18-3 home-opening win vs. Delaware State on Feb. 19, with that total ranking in a tie for second-best in the nation for a single game so far this season.
- Senior Emma Curtis picked up a career-high 13 saves, including 10 in the second half, in the Eagles' most recent victory, a 20-16 win at city rival George Washington on Feb. 26.
- On the offensive end, it was junior Kendall Goldblum who led the way at GW, scoring six goals. Vinall added five while Harkins and sophomore Hali Sibilia both tallied three goals apiece.
- Harkins is tied for fourth in the nation with 7.25 points per game (14 goals, 15 assists). She set a career high of eight total points in the first game of the season, a 21-12 win at Saint Francis, and broke her own record again with nine points in the Delaware State victory.
- The Eagles returned seven starters from the 2019 squad that went 7-10, the strongest season for the program in recent years.
- Included among those returners are two Patriot League Second Team selections with Vinall and Goldblum. Vinall was also one of the 16 selections to the 2020 PL Preseason All-League team.
SCOUTING THE SHARKS
- In its first season competing in Division I and with a new name, the Sharks, LIU was picked to finish fifth in the Northeast Conference.
- LIU edged Manhattan College 7-5 on Feb. 12, but the Sharks have lost their other three games to Rutgers (15-9), Monmouth (20-13) and Quinnipiac (15-13).
- The Sharks have a combined (LIU and LIU Post) 31 returning players and nine newcomers, including seven freshmen. Returning for the Sharks this season are two IWLCA Division II All Americans, seniors Brianna Feldman and Alyssa Mallery).
- Mallery scored her 200th career goal in LIU's most recent game, a 15-13 loss to Quinnipiac. She had five goals in the contest and leads the Sharks with nine goals overall.
- Senior Paige Sherlock is close behind Mallery with seven goals, while Amanda Masullo and Elise Person have both scored six.
- Sophomore Hailey Duchnowski has played every minute in goal for LIU with 51 saves to 55 goals allowed.
