WASHINGTON - The American University lacrosse team (1-0) comes home for the first time in 2020 after a triumphant season-opener to host Delaware State at 3 p.m. on Wednesday.
SCOUTING THE EAGLES
- American picked up a dominant 21-12 at Saint Francis on Saturday to open the 2020 slate behind a career-high performance from senior Casey Harkins.
- Harkins led the Eagles with six goals and eight points, eclipsing her previous single-game career-highs from last season (4g, 5p).
- Junior Emma Vinall also had her strongest season-opener with five goals and seven points alongside her team-high six draw controls.
- Seven other Eagles added to AU's tally, including a pair of freshmen - Sadie Herman and Emma Hare, who scored a goal each.
- Sophomore Hali Sibilia led in the midfield with four ground balls and three caused turnovers to go along with her four draw controls and one goal.Â
- Junior Delaney Oliveira played all but 10 minutes in goal to earn her first career win with a career-high six saves.
- The Eagles returned seven starters from the 2019 squad that went 7-10, the strongest season for the program in recent years.
- Included among those returners are two Patriot League Second Team selections with Vinall and junior Kendall Goldblum. Vinall was also the lone Eagle to be selected as one of the 16 selections to the PL Preseason All-League team.
- The pair combined for 17 hat tricks last year behind the team-high 65 points and 51 goals from Vinall. She led the league during conference play with 3.56 goals per game, and tied for first with 6.67 shots per game.
- Goldblum sat just behind her in second on the team with 38 goals, 47 points, and 57 draw controls.
SCOUTING THE HORNETS
- Delaware State opened its season under first-year head coach Pam Jenkins with back-to-back losses against Lafayette, 18-6, and Longwood, 22-4. The Hornets closed 2019 with a 2-11 overall record, 0-5 in Southern Conference.
- Gwenna Gentle and Jordan Santana were the only two goal-scorers for the Hornets with two each while Emily McGill chipped in the team's only assist.
- Allie St. Pierre played all 60 minutes in goal and picked up 11 saves.
- Delaware State returned three of its top four scorers from last season, including McGill who was second on the team with 10 goals and 11 points. Junior Tamrin Swann added eight goals and nine points.
