Personal Records Highlight Last Regular Season Meet

WASHINGTON - The American University track team closed its indoor regular season in record fashion on Friday, February 14, and Saturday, Feb. 15. Three Eagles picked up new personal records (PRs) at the prestigious David Hemery Valentine Invitational, hosted by Boston University.

#AUTF NOTES
  • Freshmen Nia Holden and Sarah Maple opened the weekend for the Eagles with the women's 800-meter and mile runs, respectively.
  • Holden finished 10th in her section, crossing just off her PR with a 2:18.84 finish. Holden already holds a spot in the program's all-time top ten list for the event (fifth) with her 2:18.67 PR from the George Mason Patriot Games.
  • Maple, on the other hand, dipped just under her PR in the mile (5:14.89) with a 5:12.37 finish to take 11th in her section.
  • A pair of freshman men highlighted Saturday's events, starting with a new mile PR for Tucker Zullo who nudged just under his previous best (4:16.73) with a final time of 4:16.27.
  • Both Zullo and Maple continue to close in on the program's top ten list in the mile, and currently sit about six seconds out from the 10th spot on the men's and women's lists, respectively.
  • Classmate Russell Sullivan knocked off an impressive 17 seconds off his debut in the event, clocking through in 14:39.93 to land within 10 seconds of a program all-time top ten spot.
HEAR FROM COACH GRAHAM
"This was our first big travel to a big meet this year, and we held our own pretty well. Both Nia and Sarah finished right at their PR's in the 800m and mile. The same held true for Tucker on the men's side in the mile. Both Nia and Tucker were in very physical heats that caused their races to be more aggressive than need be, but they responded well to that and had solid days. Russell had a great performance in the 5k to close out the meet for us. Chopping off 17 seconds of his PR from two weeks ago down to 14:39, which I believe is a freshman school record."

NEXT UP...
The Eagles will take next weekend off as they gear up for the Patriot League Championships in Bethlehem, Pa., on Saturday, Feb. 29, and Sunday, March 1.
