Wrestling Drops an Exciting Match vs. Navy, 24-21

WASHINGTON - In a crowd-pleasing match that featured five pins, one sudden victory decision and two late takedowns for wins, American University wrestling came up just short to visiting Navy in a 24-21 loss.

MATCH RECAP
  • The Eagles (2-6, 2-4) won six of 10 bouts overall, but were pinned by the Midshipmen (5-4, 2-1) in all four of their losses.
  • No. 23 Tanner Harvey (184) was the wrestler of the match for AU with a pin in 49 seconds over Navy's Andrew Buckley. Harvey appeared to get the fall even earlier, but was able to repeat his move a second time before the first minute of the bout was over.
  • The tone for a thrilling night was set early on, as No. 24 Gage Curry trailed 1-0 with less than 10 seconds remaining in the third period. His opponent, No. 20 Logan Treaster, was due a point for riding time but gave up a stall point to Curry just before Curry was able to get a takedown in the final seconds and earn the 3-2 victory.
  • After a Navy win by fall for Casey Cobb over AU's Joshua Vega, No. 26 Sal Profaci echoed Curry's heroics late in the 141 bout. Profaci and Navy's Cody Trybus were tied 5-5 before a late takedown for Profaci gave him the 7-5 decision and tied up the match at 6-6.
  • The Eagles' top-ranked wrestler, No. 7 Kizhan Clarke, improved to 31-3 for the season with a 7-3 decision over Navy's Jon Park.
  • AU trailed 12-9 heading into Tim Fitzpatrick's 165 bout. He trailed Navy's Brian Case 4-3 after two periods, but later tied it up 6-6 at the end of regulation. With a takedown in overtime, Fitzpatrick scored the 8-6 win and tied up the match yet again.
  • The back-and-forth action continued as a Navy pin at 174 was followed by Harvey's quick win at 184, putting the match even at 18-18.
  • AU trailed 24-18 after its final loss at 197. Niko Camacho was solid with a 5-1 decision over John Birchmeier, but the three points earned were three short of Navy's overall total.
