Wrestling Drops Dual at No. 12 Lehigh, 33-8

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Seventh-ranked Kizhan Clarke and #22 Sal Profaci both earned wins but American University wrestling lost 33-8 at #12 Lehigh (7-3) on Friday night. The Eagles (2-4) came up against some of the top wrestlers in the nation in front of the Mountain Hawks' home crowd of over 1,300.

MATCH NOTES
  • Clarke (149) improves to 29-3 with his tech fall victory, and 5-1 in dual matches. He had two takedowns in the first period for a 4-1 lead, but exploded from there and made it 20-5 by the end.
  • The first to get AU on the board was Profaci (141), who beat Lehigh's Dan Moran by decision, 6-3.
  • The win was Profaci's 20th of the season, putting him at 20-6 overall and 5-1 in dual matches.
  • Six of the Eagles' losses were against opponents ranked in the top 10 of their respective weight classes, including two in the top five.
  • #16 Tanner Harvey (184) had two reversals and two takedowns that kept him tied 8-8 heading into the third period. He got a point for riding time but a late reversal and a ride out by opponent #10 Chris Weiler in the third handed Harvey a narrow, 10-9 loss.

HEAD COACH TEAGUE MOORE
  • "I'm really proud and happy for Kizhan and Sal. They came into a tough environment and performed well. Both had a bad experience in the past and they wanted to change that tonight and they did. Tanner and Ethan gave very good efforts and were very close to getting their matches to go their way. I'm sure both will learn from this environment moving forward.  We have to forget this loss quickly. We see Columbia on Sunday and they have a tough team that we need to be ready for. We are a much better team than we showed tonight. I believe we can bring more fight and determination on Sunday."
UP NEXT
  • AU will be back in action on Sunday, Jan. 19, in a dual at EIWA opponent Columbia at 1 p.m.
