WASHINGTON -Â The American University field hockey team (3-4, 0-0 PL) is back at Jacobs Complex for a thrilling pair of games this weekend, starting with the Patriot League opener against Bucknell (4-3, 1-0 PL) on Saturday and concluding with a visit from crosstown foe Georgetown (5-4, 1-1 BIG EAST) on Sunday.
SERIES HISTORY vs. BUCKNELL
- AU leads the 34-game series against the Bison, 26-7. The Eagles have come out on top the last two meetings, including a 1-0 victory during the 2018 Patriot League Tournament semifinal.
- The last time Bucknell overpowered American was during the 2017 Patriot League Tournament when the Bison knocked out the Eagles in the semifinal round, 2-1, after advancing into a shootout.
SERIES HISTORY vs. GEORGETOWN
- American has also dominated the series against Georgetown, 19-4.
- This is the first meeting between the Eagles and Hoyas since 2011, when AU defended its home turf with a 3-0 victory to close out the nonconference portion of the slate.
SCOUTING THE EAGLES
- American is looking to get back in the win column this weekend after dropping a 1-0 heartbreaker against UC Davis on September 19. The Eagles are 3-4 overall this season after wins against New Hampshire, 4-2, James Madison, 2-1, and Towson, 7-0.
- Junior Noor Coenen leads the Eagles with 14 points off five goals and four assists. The threesome of junior Gaby de Kock, and sophomores Hannah Moser and Josie Formica all rank second on the squad with four points after each contributing a pair of goals during the first seven games of the season. Coenen is also 2-2 on penalty shot opportunities after hitting a pair during her record-breaking weekend at the Terrapin Invitational. The PL Preseason Offensive Player of the Year led the Eagles during the two-game weekend with 11 points, scoring four goals including a hat trick during her career-high eight-point performance against Towson.
- Four of the 11 AU newcomers have contributed to the team's season score sheet with de Kock, sophomore Atina Pagani, and freshmen Megan Hoffman and Merel Dupont entering with at least one point on the season.
- Freshman Fiona Minter has led the team from the cage so far this year, starting six of the seven games and picking up 10 saves with a .476 save percentage.Â
- Senior Caroline Miller earned her first start of the season against Towson and came away with her first career shutout.
- The Eagles are second in the Patriot League for scoring margin (0.55) and goals against average (1.50), and rank third in goals per game (2.14) and corners per game (6.14).
- Coenen also ranks among the top in the league, sitting in second for goals per game (0.71) and points per game (2.0).Â
SCOUTING THE BISON
- Bucknell opened its 2019 Patriot League season slate with a 1-0 upset over No. 25 Boston University on Saturday.Â
- Maddie Rehak earned PL Rookie of the Week after earning the game-winner against the Terriers. She also scored the first of two goals during Bucknell's win over Sacred Heart on Sunday.
- Olivia Harris continues to rank as one of the top goalkeepers in the league as No. 2 in both saves (5.86/game) and goals against average (1.56). She's third in the league for save percentage (.788).
- Brittany Willwerth leads the overall scoring efforts with seven points off three goals and an assist. Rehak is second the team with her three goals, followed by Allie Christopher and Emily Doyle with two each.
- The Bison had a pair of common foes with the Eagles during the nonconference season with James Madison and Richmond. Both games accounted for two of their three losses of the season after falling in 3-2 battles for both games. AU also tallied a 3-2 loss against the Spiders, but beat out James Madison, 2-1, during the Terrapin Invitational.
SCOUTING THE HOYAS
- Georgetown enters the weekend with a 5-4 overall record, including a 1-1 record in Big East play. The Hoyas are looking to bounce back from their first conference loss of the season after being outpaced by Quinnipiac on Friday, Sept. 27. Georgetown's only other losses this season came against Appalachian State, 1-0, James Madison, 3-2, and Lehigh, 3-0.
- Georgetown opened the conference slate with a 3-2 win against Villanova behind goals from Michaela Bruno, Lindsay Getz, and Cami Osborne.
- Getz leads the team's overall scoring efforts with nine points (four goals, one assist), followed closely by Bruno with eight points (three goals, two assists), and Ellie Maransky's seven points (three goals, one assist).
- All three have earned game-winners so far this season along with Ali Cronin and Kylee Cunningham.
- Ciara Weets has started each of the nine games in goal and picked up 48 saves so far this season. She currently leads the Big East with 5.50 saves per game and ranks second with her .772 save percentage.
