WASHINGTON - The American University field hockey team is set to return to Jacobs Complex on Sunday for a 1 p.m. start against Richmond to conclude its two-game Labor Day Weekend to open the 2019 season.

SERIES HISTORY

  • AU trails the Spiders in the 34-game series, 16-18.
  • The Eagles come into the game on a 3-0 run against the Spiders, though, after earning wins in 2016, 2017, and most recently 2018 with a 4-1 victory during the home opener.
  • AU's last loss to Richmond was in 2015, 2-1 (OT).

NOTES

  • American was one of three Patriot League teams to open the 2019 season with victories on Friday after the Eagles outpaced New Hampshire, 4-2.
  • Four Eagles contributed to the final scoresheet, including one newcomer as junior transfer Gaby de Kock tallied the third goal of the day.
  • Junior Noor Coenen opened scoring in the final minutes of the first half with a long shot after a penalty corner insertion.
  • Sophomore Hannah Moser was the next to get on the board after a nice run in front of goal. de Kock added the third off a rebound during a penalty corner attempt, and senior Jette Dieckmann closed scoring after knocking in a pass from sophomore transfer Atina Pagani.
  • The Eagles, who boast a young team this season with 11 newcomers, nine freshmen, and eight sophomores, played ten of their new players against the Wildcats including freshman Fiona Minter, who got her first start in goal.
  • American also welcomes back a talented group of returners, including Patriot League Preseason Player of the Year Noor Coenen and All-Patriot League Preseason Team selections Jette Dieckmann and Georgia Davies. In all, AU returns five starters from last year's squad that advanced to the program's 13th Patriot League Championship appearance.

SCOUTING THE SPIDERS

  • Richmond had a big test to open the season, falling to No. 2 Maryland in College Park, Md., on Friday, 5-1.
  • Addie Nash was the only Spider to score during the game. Goalkeeper Frankie Conklin collected five saves in her 53 minutes of play.
  • Richmond was predicted to finish fourth in the Atlantic 10 preseason poll after finishing fourth last season.
  • The Spiders return their top three scorers from 2018 with Elise Zwicklbauer (6g, 5a), Nash (7g, 1a), and Steffie Bongers (7g, 1a).
  • Bongers was also Richmond's sole A-10 All-Preseason Team selection after earning All-Rookie Team honors last year.
  • The Spiders will also see some new blood in goal with freshman Erika Latta and Conklin.
