WASHINGTON – Jacobs Complex will play host to another No. 1 vs. No. 2 battle at 12:05 p.m. on Sunday, as the top-seeded American University field hockey team (12-5, 6-0 PL) hosts No. 2 Lafayette (12-7, 5-1 PL) for the Patriot League Tournament title.
The winner will advance into the NCAA Play-In Round on Wednesday, Nov. 13, to fight for a chance for an NCAA Tournament First Round berth.
SERIES HISTORY
- This will be the second time the two teams clashed in as many weeks after the Eagles clinched the regular-season crown with a 1-0 victory over the then-undefeated Leopards to close the regular season on Saturday, November 2.
- Sophomore Hannah Moser put away the game-winner early in the match as Lafayette struggled against the Eagles' deep defense. Senior goalkeeper Caroline Miller also came away with one of the highlights of the day with a shutout performance on senior day.
- AU has dominated the 27-game series, 19-8, and haven't dropped a game to the Leopards since the 2012 Patriot League title game which ended 2-1 in overtime.
SCOUTING THE EAGLES
- American dominated in its 5-1 semifinal win over Holy Cross on Friday behind an early hat trick from the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year, junior Noor Coenen.
- Four players joined Coenen on the All-Patriot League First and Second Teams with sophomores Georgia Davies (First Team) and Atina Pagani (First Team), junior Lauren Fredricks (Second Team), and senior Jette Dieckmann (Second Team).
- Sophomore Aidan Rossman also picked up a postseason award as one of the 11 selections to the Academic All-Patriot League Team.
- Rossman and Davies added a goal each in the fourth quarter against the Crusaders while Fredricks pitched in a pair of assists and junior Gaby de Kock and freshman Charllene Boshoff added one each.
- Coenen, who opened the season as the PL Preseason Player of the Year, has ranked among the top players in the country for much of the season. She currently sits in eighth in Division I for points per game and 13th for goals per game.
- Her third hat trick of the season, the performance moved Coenen up in the AU record books to seventh for single-season points (40), sixth for single-season goals (17), 10th for career points (97), and sixth for career goals (41).
- Moser sits next behind Coenen with 15 points on the season (7g, 1a) followed by de Kock and Rossman with nine points each.
- Freshman Fiona Minter has led the team from goal in all but two games this season and averages 1.33 goals against and a .608 save percentage.
- Boshoff, Davies, and sophomore Maura Phelan have paced the strongest defensive line in the league, allowing only 1.24 goals per game while averaging 2.71 per game.
SCOUTING THE LEOPARDS
- No. 2 Lafayette picked up the late 1-0 win in a tight contest against No. 3 Bucknell during Friday's semifinal.
- Audrey Sawers hit the game-winner with less than eight minutes left in regulation, working the ball in after one of the Leopards' eight penalty corners.
- It will be a showdown between the two top players in the league as Lafayette's Lisa van der Geest was selected as the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year. Lafayette's head coach Jennifer Stone was also honored by the PL as Coach of the Year.
- Van der Geest leads the team with 21 points off seven goals and seven assists, followed closely by Molly McAndrew's 20 points (9 goals, two assist).
- Goalkeeper Sarah Park has led the team from goal all season and averages 1.24 goals against and a .750 save percentage. She leads the league with eight shutouts this season, including during the semifinal win over Bucknell.
- As a team, Lafayette averages 2.11 goals per game while holding opponents to only 1.37.
