WASHINGTON – The American University field hockey team (13-5, 6-0 PL) will fight for the chance to play in the program's 11th NCAA Tournament on Wednesday, November 13, as the No. 23 Eagles travel to No. 25 Fairfield (18-2, 6-0 NEC) for the NCAA Play-In Game.
SERIES HISTORY
- American enters the contest with history on its side, as the Eagles lead the series against its old Patriot League foe, 5-0.
- Fairfield was a member of the PL through the 2003 season but never clashed against the Eagles in the postseason.
- The last time the two teams met was in 2016 at Maryland's Terrapin Invitational where the Eagles claimed the 4-2 victory. AU went on to advance into the NCAA First Round later that season before falling to No. 1 Duke, 3-0.
SCOUTING THE EAGLES
- American had a strong showing at the Patriot League Tournament last weekend, hosted by the Eagles at Jacobs Complex.
- Leading the way, once again, was Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year, junior Noor Coenen, who tied several tournament records on the way to the program's 11th title. Her weekend opened with a hat trick performance against Holy Cross in the PL semifinal, tying the league's tournament record for single-game goals and points (6).
- She closed with a record-tying four goals and nine points after adding a goal and an assist during the 3-2 victory over Lafayette for the championship.
- Sophomores Aidan Rossman and Georgia Davies also tabbed goals against the Crusaders, while sophomores Josie Formica and Atina Pagani added a goal each against the Leopards.
- Coenen has been an offensive force for the Eagles all season, and continues to sit alongside some of the best players in the country at fourth in Division I for goals per game (1.00) and fifth for points per game (2.39). She has also moved up in the single-season and career record books for goals and points. She ranks fifth in program history for season goals (18), seventh for season points (43), sixth for career goals (42), and ninth for career points (100).
- Joining Coenen on the All-Patriot League teams was sophomore Georgia Davies (First Team), sophomore Atina Pagani (First Team), senior Jette Dieckmann (Second Team), and junior Lauren Fredricks (Second Team).
- Freshman Fiona Minter has paced the team with goal for most of the season, averaging 1.37 goals against an a .585 save percentage. Senior Caroline Miller took the reins in two games and collected shutouts in both with the 7-0 win over Towson and the 1-0 victory over Lafayette to clinch the regular season PL title.
- Sophomore Hannah Moser is second on the squad with 15 points (7g, 1a), followed by junior Gaby de Kock's 10 points (3g, 4a).
- As a team, the Eagles are 11th in the country for scoring margin (1.47), 13th for goals against average (1.20), and 15th for goals per game (2.72).
SCOUTING FAIRFIELD
- The Stags enter the game off an 11-game win streak, including 6-0 in conference play and a pair of 2-1 victories over Sacred Heart and Rider (OT) to clinch the tournament title.
