WASHINGTON - The American University field hockey team (10-4, 5-0 PL) will host two of its biggest games of the year this week to close out the regular season, starting with a crosstown matchup against No. 2 Maryland (15-2, 7-1 Big Ten) at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, October 29.
The Eagles will return to Jacobs on Saturday, November 2, to fight for the Patriot League regular season title against Lafayette at 11 a.m.
SERIES HISTORY
- Maryland has dominated the 43-game series against American, 42-1.
- The only AU win came out of a top-ten showdown between the No. 9 Eagles and No. 3 Terrapins in 2004. A pair of second-half goals delivered American's 3-1 victory over Maryland en route to a run into the NCAA Tournament where the Eagles fell to the Terrapins in the second round, 2-0.
SCOUTING THE EAGLES
- American enters the week leading the Patriot League alongside Lafayette with an undefeated 5-0 record in the conference, and off a 7-0 win streak with nonconference wins against Georgetown and VCU.
- The Eagles picked up a dominant 7-1 victory over Colgate on Saturday behind a four-goal effort from the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week, junior Noor Coenen. That performance tied her single-game career-high from 2017 and put her solidly in first in the PL rankings for goals (14) and points (34). The next player in both categories is Lehigh's Drew Pecora with 12 goals and 27 points.
- Coenen also ranks fifth in Division I for both categories.
- Freshman goalkeeper Fiona Minter also finds herself in the top-25 of the national rankings. She has led the team from goal in all but one game this season, including the 2-0 shutout against defending PL champion, Boston University. She ranks 21st in Division I with a 1.36 goals against average after allowing only four opponents to score more than one goal in her 13 games.
- Three other players contributed to the win over the Raiders on Saturday, including freshmen Abby Kreider and Julia Kraft who both picked up their first goals in the red, white, and blue. Sophomore Hannah Moser rounded out the goal scorers.
- A total of 13 players have contributed to AU's 40 goals so far this season, including six newcomers with junior transfer Gaby de Kock, sophomore transfer Atina Pagani, and freshmen Charllene Boshoff, Megan Hoffman, Kraft, and Kreider.
- Moser ranks second on the team with a career-high 13 points on the season off six goals and one assist, followed by de Kock and senior Jette Dieckmann with eight points (3g, 2a) each.
- As a team, AU leads the Patriot League in goals per game (2.86), penalty corners per game (7.00), scoring margin (1.53), goals against average (1.26), and win percentage (.714).
SCOUTING THE TERRAPINS
- No. 2 ranked Maryland secured its fifth Big Ten title in the last six years on Friday with a 5-1 win over Michigan State. The Terrapins have faced 11 ranked teams in its 17 games so far this season and lost to only two - No. 3 Duke, 1-0, and No. 9 Michigan, 1-0.
- Madison Maguire led the squad with her first hat trick of the season along with an assist for a season-high seven points. She leads the team with 34 points this year off 12 goals and 10 assists.
- Emma DeBerdine and Mayv Clune each contributed a goal against the Spartans while Bibi Donraadt, Kelee Lepage pitched in assists alongside Maguire and DeBerdine.
- Donraadt ranks second on the team with 20 points so far this season (6g, 8a), followed by Linda Cobano and DeBerdine with 18 points each.
- Noelle Frost leads the team from goal with an impressive 0.96 goals against average and .771 save percentage. She ranks second in the country with her .882 win-loss percentage, and fifth for her goals against average.
- As a team, Maryland ranks in the top-five in eight statistical categories, including goals per game (3rd - 3.35), assists per game (3rd - 2.88), points per game (4th - 9.59), scoring margin (4th - 2.31), and penalty corners per game (4th - 7.71).
UP NEXT...
American saved the best for last in its regular-season home schedule. The Eagles will host Lafayette at 11 a.m. on Saturday to determine the Patriot League regular season title and right to host the PL Tournament next weekend. Both team's enter with a perfect 5-0 record in the conference. The game will also serve as the team's Senior Day celebration for

Jette Dieckmann.
