Rainey Earns Patriot League Athlete of the Week Nod

WASHINGTON - The American University track & field team earned its second consecutive Patriot League Athlete of the Week honor on Tuesday, as junior Matthew Rainey earned the honor after a record-breaking weekend.

Rainey closed with the fastest 1500-meter run time in the Patriot League on Saturday, finishing ninth at the George Mason Spring Invitational with a new personal record (PR) of 3:45.70. That finish, the sixth-fastest in program history, has him ranked 57th in NCAA Division I and 37th in the East Region to place him within qualification for the NCAA Championships East Preliminary Round.

Rainey is the second Eagle to earn the league's weekly honor after senior Brianna Belo was selected last week after earning a new school record in the 800m (2:07.52) to lead the conference and rank 25th in the NCAA East Region, 37th in NCAA Division I.
