WASHINGTON – Senior Alaeldin Tirba was among the highlights from the Terrapin Invitational for the American University track & field team, as the Eagles opened their 2018 indoor slate on Saturday.

"The goal for today was for the athletes to get back on the track and compete well after a long block of very hard training," head coach Sean Graham said. "Some were able to do that better than others, but all in all this was a good day of racing and learning! We are looking forward to seeing them make adjustments and get back on the track next week."

Tirba recorded the only event win of the day for AU with a 4:16.02 finish in the mile run, landing six seconds off of his personal record from the 2016 Patriot League Indoor Championships (4:10.87).

Six other Eagles earned top-ten finishes in their respective events at the meet, hosted by the University of Maryland. Leading the way was senior Brianna Belo, who crossed in third in the women's 800m run. Her final time of 2:14.67 was only three seconds off of her school record performance from the 2017 season (2:11.41).

Junior Matthew Rainey also paced through in the top ten of the men's mile (2:00.41).

Sophomore Arianna Lopez led the three AU women entered in the mile run, pacing through in 5:19.87 for eighth overall.

Junior Adriana Hooks closed out the events for the women with a fourth-place finish in the women's 3000m run (10:02.88).

The men's distance medley, comprised of senior Jim Belfatto, sophomore Faolan Coogan-Puck, and freshmen John Pagliaro and Max Lustig, crossed in fifth overall to round out the top-ten AU finishes of the day.

Sophomore Emily Houghton came away with the lone personal record (PR) of the day, timing through in 1:03.23 for the 400m dash.

The Eagles will travel to New York City next weekend to compete at the Dr. Sander Invitational, hosted in the Armory from Jan. 25 to Jan. 27.
